This is my first post sharing some of my files - so take it easy

I personally ripped this script, all of the files are encoded, but it works 100% (I have it installed on a number of sites that I run)

Arreal Tilghman, Pedangdut AS Pertama

Dangdut yang semula di anggap musik pinggiran oleh sebagian orang kini tengah berkembang, pasalnya musik dangdut sudah banyak tersebar ke beberapa negara, termasuk Amerika. Belum lama ini telah lahir pedangdut asal Amerika, Arreal Tilghman yang memenangkan kontes dangdut di negaranya pada Audisi Dangdut In America.

Pria kelahiran 22 Maret 1986, mangaku menyukai musik dangdut karena istimewa dan unik. Arreal Tilghman pun berkeinginan menjadi bintang dangdut dan menjadikan musik dangdut setara dengan musik-musik lainnya.

Ia begitu serius akan mimpinya, hingga menggaet Trie Utami yang akrab di panggil Mba iie, sebagai guru vokal dalam pembuatan album “Dangdut In Amerika” yang akan dirilis pada November 2009 nanti

Keberadaan dan keseriusan Arreal, menjadi kebanggan tersendiri bagi para pecinta musik dangdut tanah air. Setidaknya mimpi dangdut bisa merambah pasar Amerika tengah dirajut dan dimulai.

Tak kalah senangnya adalah ketua DPR RI Agung Laksono yang sempat memebri pernyataan "Album Dangdut in Amerika ini akan memperkenalkan produk seni budaya Indonesia di Amerika Serikat, dan tentu saja akan juga mendongkrak nama Indonesia di mata internasional," kata Agung seperti dilansir Antara

Sejak tahun 2006 Arreal sudah kerap membawakan lagu-lagu dangdut dalam setiap festival yang diikutinya, Ia menganggap musik dangdut lebih menjanjikan, karena aliran musik yang lain sudah banyak diminati maka ia memilih jalur dangdut karena beda.

Sebelum ia merambah dangdut, Arreal adalah seorang petugas pemadam kebakaran dan setelah mengikuti audisi Dangdut in Amerika Ia terpilih menjadi pemenang pertama dan mendapat kesempatan untuk membuat album Dangdut In Amerika. Album itu berisi delapan lagu, antara lain Puzzle of Love, Sejak Kehadiranmu, I Love You, Duhai Kekasih, You`re The Only One, dan You.

Raja Dangdut Rhoma Irama pun yakin dangdut akan diterima di kancah dunia internasional. Terbukti saat ia tampil di Amerika, musik dangdut mendapatkan sambutan hangat dari para pendengarnya.

Sebagai raja dangdut tanah air yang tersohor dengan tembang dangdutnya yang khas, pria yang akrab disapa Bang Haji ini berniat mematenkan musik dangdut sebelum musik ini diklaim oleh negara-negara lain. Bang Haji pun berharap musik dangdut bisa populer di kancah Internasional sebagai musik produk dalam negeri.

Komentar “Pertamax” (pertama kali) mungkin bukan sesuatu yang asing lagi dalam komunitas blogger dan forum-forum internet di Indonesia. Ada pro dan kontra menyangkut kata yang satu ini. Tapi sebelum berbicara lebih jauh, ada baiknya kita mengetahui dulu apa artinya.

Pertamax adalah sebuah istilah internet slang yang beredar di komunitas internet Indonesia, semacam di forum internet atau di sebuah komunitas blog. Istilah ini biasanya digunakan ketika ada seorang pembalas topik yang berhasil menulis sebagai komentator pertama di suatu tulisan tanpa membaca atau memahami tulisan tersebut terlebih dahulu. Sejarah Singkat

Istilah pertamax pertama kali datang di sebuah blog bernama KafeMotor dan dipopulerkan oleh pemilik blog tersebut.^[2] Penjelasan yang mungkin dapat menjelaskan darimana asal-usul kata tersebut ditemukan ialah karena blog tersebut mengangkat tema otomotif sebagai bahan pembahasannya. Oleh karena itu, digunakanlah istilah pertamax untuk menandai komentar pertama pada sebuah tulisan. Istilah ini kemudian menyebar ke banyak kalangan blogger Indonesia, yang kemudian diikuti oleh kalangan non-blogger lainnya semisal pada forum internet.

Istilah pertamax ini kemudian juga ditafsirkan dengan pemisahan kata "pertama" dan huruf "x". Pembacaan huruf "x" sebagai "kali" didasarkan atas kebiasaan remaja pada tahun 2005-an yang umum menyingkat kata itu dalam komunikasi tertulis. Sehingga kata pertamax bisa berarti dibaca "pertama kali".

Untuk mencegah komentator pertamax, terkadang pembuat artikel mengisi kolom komentarnya sendiri dengan pertamax atau kalimat yang senada segera setelah merilisnya.^[3]

Sekarang timbul pertanyaan, penting gak sih komentar Pertamax itu? Jawabannya tergantung masing-masing orang. Buat saya ini sah-sah saja, selama tidak bermaksud untuk ngejunk.

Ada beberapa alasan yang membuat orang melakukan komentar Pertamax:

Ingin menunjukkan eksistensinya dalam bersilaturahmi walau dengan modal “Pertamax”.
Malas membaca postingan sampai selesai.
Terburu-buru dengan alasan keterbatasan biaya online.
Terburu-buru karena ingin komentarnya berada paling atas.
Hanya iseng dan cari rusuh.
Ingin mendapatkan traffic gratis (salah kaprah).
Memang hobby dari orang tersebut.
lain-lain..

Sebelum melakukan aksi Pertamax, anda harus tahu bahwa tidak semua blogger suka postingannya dikomentari dengan kata “Pertamax”, terutama pada postingan-postingan yang serius. Jadi usahakanlah untuk tidak menuliskan “Pertamax kosong” atau komentar pertamax tanpa komentar tambahan lainnya. Tapi berikan juga sepatah dua patah kata sebagai respon dari postingan tersebut di bawah kata pertamax yang anda buat tadi.

Alasan dibalik operasi Cast Lead

Baru-baru ini Hamas memutuskan untuk melanggar gencatan senjata yang dimediasi oleh Mesir. Persisnya beberapa hari lalu, Hamas dan mitra-mitranya menghujamkan ratusan roket dan mortar pada pusat-pusat pemukiman penduduk Israel di bagian selatan Israel. Israel telah pada batas maksimal untuk bertahan dan tetap berusaha menenangkan diri, situasi memaksa aksi militer untuk menjaga warganegara kami dan member mereka kehidupan yang normal. Seperempat juta warganegara Israel telah diteror secara bertubi-tubi dari Jalur Gaza dengan ribuan misil yang diluncurkan selama 8 tahun terakhir. Tidak ada Negara manapun yang akan menerima serangan gencar pada warganya.

Aksi militer ini ditujukan untuk menjaga penduduk di Negara Israel, tujuannya adalah untuk menyeran semakin bertumbuhnya infrastruktur yang mendukung terror dan kemampuan Hamas dan organisasi aliansinya meluncurkan misil dan mortar pada warganegara Israel, serta melakukan serangan terror dalam bentuk apapun, misalnya penculikan atas warga sipil Israel. Jika Hamas menghentikan terror, maka aksi ini tidak diperlukan. Seperti telah dijelaskan berulang kali, diam akan dijawab kembali dengan diam, namun terror akan melahirkan sebuah respon.

Penghancuran Situasi Sebagai Akibat Langsung Kebijakan Hamas

Hamas melanggar ketenangan, menembak dan menyerang warga Israel dan berinvestasi untuk mempersenjatai diri serta menggalang kekuatan. Kesepakatan gencatan senjata yang dimediasi oleh Mesir dilanggar oleh Hamas, bukan hanya karena terror terhadap warga Israel namun juga secara besar-besaran menggalang kekuatan dan mempersenjatai diri dengan persenjataan dan perlengkapan perang, dengan tujuan meningkatkan kapasitas tror dan memperluas jangkauan ancaman terhadap warga Israel. Hal ini juga termasuk penyelundupan dan pembuatan ribuan roket dan mortar dalam berbagai jenis dan diameter, termasuk antitank dan roket anti pesawat udara.

Penduduk Gaza adalah tawanan dalam agenda ekstrimis Hamas

Israel tidak menginginkan krisis kemanusiaan.

Otoritas Hamas di Jalur Gaza adalah satu-satunya penyebab penderitaan dan kesulitan pada penduduk di sana serta juga menghancurkan situasi di sana. Beberapa hari yang lalu saja, Hamas menghentikan bantuan kemanusiaan yang dibawa dari Mesir ke Gaza. Untuk perbandingan saja : dalam bulan-bulan pertama masa tenang, 17.000 truk memasuki Gaza dibandingkan 9.000 (hampir 2 kalinya) dalam jangka waktu yang hampir bersamaan sebelum gencatan senjata. Organisasi teroris menguasai pusat-pusat pemukiman penduduk Palestina dan mengeksploitasi mereka. Israel di lain pihak secara langsung mengarahkan aktivitasnya pada elemen teroris dan melakukan segenap upaya untuk menghindari korban mereka yang tidak bersalah. Hamas membawa perempuan dan anak-anak ke atap rumah-rumah yang menjadi pusat kegiatan teroris dalam upaya menghindari serangan udara. Hamas mengirimkan penduduk sipilnya ke garis depan, dan mengirim para ibu Palestina untuk membunuh anak-anak Israel dalam serangan bunuh diri. Omar Fathi Hamad, seorang anggota Parlemen Hamas mengatakan dalam wawancara televisi (Feb 2008), “Orang Palestina telah mengembangkan metodenya sendiri untuk menghabisi…ini sudah menjadi sebuah industri… menjadikan para perempuan, anak-anak dan orang lanjut usia menjadi tameng hidup.”

Pada saat penyerangan terror ini, pemerintah Israel secara terbuka sedang melakukan proses politik dengan Presiden Palestina terpilih yang dikepalai oleh Presiden Abu Mazen dan Perdana Menteri Fayyad. Hamas menolak negosiasi dan perundingan apapun dengan Israel, melanjutkan diri sebagai elemen yang tidak stabil di kawasan.

OPERASI IDF DI JALUR GAZA

Siapa yang bertanggungjawab atas krisis ini?

Sejak pengambil-alihan Gaza oleh Hamas dengan kekerasan di tahun 2007, Hamas telah menjadikan warga Israel sasaran serangan roket di dalam wilayah kedaulatan Israel sendiri, pelanggaran hukum internasional yang sangat mencolok. Serangan tiap hari, granat dan bom yang ditujukan pada penduduk sipil, dengan sekitar 90 granat dan bom mortar setiap harinya.

Enam bulan terakhir "keadaan tenang" telah dicapai antara Israel dan Hamas. Kesepakatan gencatan senjata yang dimediasi oleh Mesir dieksploitasi oleh Hamas, tidak hanya melalui teror terhadap warga Israel namun juga dengan menggalang kekuatan serta secara besar-besaran mempersenjatai diri dengan peralatan dan perlengkapan perang, dengan tujuan meningkatkan kapasitas mereka untuk teror dan memperluas jangkauan ancaman terhadap warga Israel. Hal ini termasuk penyelundupan dan pembuatan ribuan roket dan granat mortar dalam berbagai jenis dan diameter, termasuk antitank dan roket anti pesawat udara.

Baru-baru ini Hamas memutuskan untuk melanggar gencatan senjata, persisnya beberapa hari lalu, Hamas dan sekutunya menghujani pusat-pusat pemukiman penduduk sipil di bagian selatan Israel dengan ratusan roket dan granat mortar. Israel telah pada batas maksimal untuk bertahan dan tetap berusaha menahan diri, situasi memaksa aksi militer untuk menjaga warganegara Israel serta memberi mereka kehidupan yang normal.

Seperempat juta warganegara Israel telah diteror secara bertubi-tubi dari Jalur Gaza dengan ribuan misil yang diluncurkan selama 8 tahun terakhir. Tidak ada Negara manapun di dunia yang dapat membiarkan serangan gencar atas warganya.

Perdana Menteri Mesir telah meminta pertanggungjawaban atas situasi yang berlangsung ini kepada Hamas - Menteri Luar Negeri Mesir Ahmed Aboul Gheit dengan keras mengecam Hamas pada hari Senin. Pada konferensi pers siang hari yang ditayangkan televisi Mesir, ia menyatakan bahwa Mesir telah berkali-kali memberi peringatan atas situasi yang berlangsung dan bahwa siapapun yang tidak memperhatikan (Hamas) akan dinyatakan bertanggung jawab dan tidak menyalahkan pihak lain :

Apa tujuan operasi ini ?

Aksi militer ditujukan untuk melindungi penduduk Negara Israel, tujuannya semata-mata untuk menyerang semakin berkembangnya infrastruktur yang membuat teror yang memampukan Hamas beserta organisasi sekutunya meluncurkan misil dan granat mortar pada warga Israel serta membuat serangan teror dalam berbagai bentuk. Meskipun telah ada aksi militer - Hamas juga masih menghujamkan roket dan misil ke Israel. Lebih dari 50 roket dan misil ditembakkan pada tanggal 29 mengakibatkan 3 orang korban jiwa dan puluhan korban luka.

Seperti berulangkali telah Israel sampaikan pada Hamas - diam akan dijawab dengan diam, namun teror akan melahirkan sebuah respon.

Apa penyebab situasi kemanusiaan di Gaza sekarang ini?

Israel tidak menghendaki adanya krisis kemanusiaan.

Otorita Hamas di Jalur Gaza adalah satu-satunya penyebab penderitaan dan kesulitan pada penduduk di sana serta juga menghancurkan situasi mereka. Beberapa hari yang lalu, Hamas menghentikan bantuan kemanusiaan yang dibawa dari Mesir ke Gaza. Untuk perbandingan saja : dalam bulan-bulan pertama masa tenang, 17.000 truk memasuki Gaza dibandingkan 9.000 (hampir 2 kalinya) dalam jangka waktu yang hampir bersamaan sebelum gencatan senjata.

Meskipun ada aksi militer, Israel telah membuka perbatasan bagi masuknya bantuan kemanusiaan walaupun mengambil resiko besar karena perbatasan secara terus menerus dibom. Dalam 3 hari terakhir sejak aksi militer dimulai, lebih dari 120 truk yang membawa bantuan memasuki Gaza melalui berbagai perbatasan.

Israel juga mengijinkan evakuasi korban Palestina yang terluka serius dikirim ke rumah sakit di Israel melalui perbatasan-perbatasan. Israel melakukan segenap upayanya hanya menargetkan bangunan-bangunan Hamas dan individu Hamas saja. Hal ini telah dikonfirmasikan melalui laporan yang diterbitkan PBB baru-baru ini dan juga melalui laporan berbagai kantor berita di luar Israel.

Beda dengan Israel - Hamas melakukan segalanya untuk mendapatkan korban tewas sebanyak mungkin, utamanya dengan penembakkan ke pusat-pusat pemukiman penduduk sipil. Dalam upaya membesar-besarkan korban sipil di pihak Palestina, Hamas tidak melarang korban luka meninggalkan Gaza untuk mendapatkan perawatan. BBC melaporkan :

Korban di pihak Israel lebih sedikit dibandingkan dari pihak Palestina - Apakah reaksi Israel proporsional?

Jumlah korban Israel menunjukkan fakta bahwa sistem alarm pertahanan Israel dan tempat-tempat perlindungan telah mencegah korban kematian yang diharapkan oleh Hamas. Dengan serangan sebanyak 90 misil dan roket yang ditujukan secara khusus pada pusat-pusat pemukiman penduduk sipil, tidak diragukan lagi bahwa jika tanpa tempat-tempat perlindungan, jumlah korban dipastikan akan lebih tinggi.

Telah disampaikan oleh PBB dan kantor berita asing (lihat di atas, tentang situasi kemanusiaan) bahwa kebanyakan korban dari pihak Palestina ada para polisi dan pejabat Hamas. Israel hanya menargetkan Hamas dan mengupayakan segalanya untuk menghindari korban sipil, sementara Hamas benar-benar menargetkan penduduk sipil.

Bukankah ini merupakan tindakan yang proporsional bagi negara berdaulat manapun yang mengalami kota-kotanya dibom terus menerus selama bertahun-tahun, berupaya mengakhiri serangan dengan menghancurkan infrastruktur pusat penembakan ?

Akankah negara-negara lain di dunia, AS, Inggris atau Singapura dapat berdiam diri setelah selama 8 tahun kota-kotanya dihujani granat ? Adakah negara yang berdiam diri melihat warga sipilnya hidup di tempat-tempat perlindungan bom selama itu ?

Israel telah mengadopsi beberapa prinsip hukum mengenai konflik bersenjata, dalam pelatihan militernya, dalam perencanaan dan pelaksanaan operasionalnya. Seringkali operasi yang akan dilakukan dibatalkan karena resiko melukai penduduk sipil tidak proporsional dengan tujuan operasi militer.

Siapa Hamas ? Apakah Hamas terpilih menjadi penguasa oleh rakyat Palestina ?

Ini adalah deklarasi tujuan yang disampaikan oleh Hamas sendiri. Hamas benar-benar menolak solusi 2 negara yang dinegosiasikan antara Israel dan Presiden Palestina, Abbas. Serta menolak negosiasi apapun dengan Israel. Beberapa kutipan dari Piagam Hamas :

Hamas telah melakukan segalanya untuk merusak harapan kedamaian di kawasan serta merusak pembicaraan perdamaian antara Israel dengan Otorita Palestina. Di tahun 1994-96 bom bunuh diri Hamas mengalihkan upaya proses perdamaian Oslo.

Hamas secara demokratik dipilih oleh rakyat Palestina di tahun 2006 untuk pemerintahan (namun bukan untuk presidensial). Namun Hamas menggelar kudeta militer pada bulan Juni 2007 dan telah melakukan pembunuhan berdarah dingin atas sekitar 200 anggota Fatah Palestina, sementara di waktu lalu Otorita Palestina hanya menangkap para anggota Hamas untuk jangka waktu pendek. Sebagai reaksi dan sesuai dengan konstitusi Palestina, Presiden Abbas memberhentikan seluruh Menteri Hamas dari pemerintahan - dan sesuai dengan Undang-Undang Palestina, Hamas tidak lagi merupakan perwakilan rakyat Palestina. Hamas menguasai Gaza dengan senjata kekerasan dan masih tetap membunuh anggota Fatah.

Gaza – Adakah jalan menuju perdamaian?

Foto-foto kekerasan dan berita dari Gaza beberapa hari ini seringkali menampilkan ketidakseimbangan, gambar yang tidak sesuai dengan krisis yang terjadi di Gaza. Analisa imparsial dari rangkaian kejadian-kejadian ini seharusnya tidak berawal di hari Sabtu yang lalu, melainkan sejak delapan tahun lalu. Delapan tahun terakhir ini, ratusan ribu warga Israel hidup dalam ancaman serangan roket Kassam Hamas tiap-tiap harinya.

Baru-baru ini, Hamas meluncurkan lebih dari 100 roket dan mortar kepada penduduk sipil Israel tiap-tiap hari. Ribuan keluarga, setiap hari hidup dalam kondisi ketakutan dan cemas. Orang-orang yang meninggalkan rumah untuk bekerja, anak-anak yang pergi ke sekolah, semuanya tidak memiliki keyakinan mereka dapat pulang ke rumah dengan selamat. Tahun lalu, ribuan roket diluncurkan dari Jalur Gaza dalam serangan besar terhadap penduduk sipil Israel yang tidak bersalah. Orang hanya menunjukkan simpati atas pemberitaan beberapa organisasi media yang sekarang ini meliput secara besar-besaran kejadian yang terjadi di Gaza, yang sebenarnya, mengabaikan realitas kehidupan sehari-hari dan penderitaan ribuan warga Israel yang telah bertahun-tahun hingga kini, hidup di bawah ancaman serangan Hamas.

Di tahun-tahun lalu, pemerintah Israel mengambil keputusan untuk tidak membalas serangan harian ini, demi mencegah terjadinya eskalasi serta menghindari konfrontasi militer. Israel lebih memilih untuk mempergunakan segala upaya politik dan diplomatik demi menghindari penggunaan kekerasan, meski harus dibayar dengan kritik tajam dari dalam negeri terhadap pemerintah -akibat menahan diri untuk membalas serangan Hamas.

Inilah bagaimana terciptanya realita baru di Gaza. Hamas terbiasa dengan realita bahwa Hamas dapat melakukan segalanya : Hamas dapat mendikte tiap kejadian, Hamas dapat menyerang kapanpun, tanpa mendapatkan perlawanan dari Israel.

Kira-kira seminggu lalu, Hamas mengumumkan bahwa Hamas menolak gencatan senjata yang telah dicapai 6 bulan lalu, memulai serangan roket besar-besaran di seluruh bagian selatan Israel.

Kali ini, pemerintah Israel memutuskan untuk mengubah peraturan main, mengubah strategi dan mengakhiri serangan Hamas terhadap Israel. Pemerintah Israel mengambil keputusan untuk memenuhi kewajibannya terhadap warganegaranya dan melindungi kehidupan mereka. Kewajiban pemerintah ini adalah kewajiban mendasar, serta merupakan kewajiban moral bagi pemerintahan manapun di seluruh dunia terhadap warganya. Dalam hal ini, Israel tidak ada bedanya dengan negara manapun di seluruh dunia. Sejak minggu lalu, kata-kata yang sering terlontar di kalangan warga Israel semata-mata ungkapan,”Sudah Cukup!” Kini saatnya untuk membela diri sendiri. Tujuan Israel untuk operasi militer sekarang ini sangat tegas dan jelas : Mengakhiri Serangan Hamas Terhadap Israel.

Mereka yang menyalahkan Israel telah melakukan reaksi “berlebihan” cenderung mengabaikan sifat Hamas. Hamas adalah organisasi teror yang fundamentalis, religius dan radikal yang beroperasi di bawah pengaruh langsung Iran serta membawa misi Jihad yang salah satunya dan yang terutama adalah menghancurkan negara Israel.

Ideologi organisasi ini tidak dapat diabaikan begitu saja. Hamas tidak meminta apapun dari Israel. Tidak pula mengharapkan negosiasi dengan Israel, karena ideologi dasarnya adalah menolak hak orang Yahudi untuk memiliki negara sendiri. Karena itu, Hamas menolak keberadaan Israel tidak perduli di perbatasan manapun. Sebab itu pula maka setiap pembicaraan diplomatik dan politik dengan organisasi ini secara praktis adalah tidak mungkin. Bahkan pendekatan yang paling pragmatispun terhadang pertanyaan : Apa yang bisa menjadi dasar negosiasi dengan Hamas – dengan keinginannya menghancurkan negara Israel ?

Israel melaksanakan serangan militer hanya terhadap instalasi militer Hamas. Sementara Israel dengan segenap upaya menghindari korban sipil, Hamas dengan sengaja menyerang hanya penduduk sipil Israel.Terlebih, Hamas dengan sengaja meluncurkan roketnya dari perkampungan di Gaza yang padat dengan penduduk sipil, menyadari Israel sangat sensitif menyerang penduduk sipil. Ini bukan saja perbedaan taktis, ini merupakan perbedaan moral mendasar yang tidak bisa diabaikan.

Realita proses perdamaian antara Israel dan Palestina juga memiliki sisi yang lain. Hamas bukan satu-satunya perwakilan Palestina. Israel dan Otorita Palestina sedang melakukan negosiasi, dengan tujuan mencapai solusi perdamaian dan perjanjian perdamaian, berdasarkan saling memahami dan kompromi historis. Perdana Menteri Israel Olmert dan Presiden Otorita Palestina melakukan pertemuan tiap minggu, berupaya mencapai solusi pragmatis dan konstruktif atas semua perselisihan di antara kedua belah pihak.

Israel berharap akan tercapainya kesepakatan serta siap membayar mahal demi tercapainya kesepakatan tersebut. Kebanyakan orang Israel mendukung dibentuknya negara Palestina yang merdeka dan berdaulat hidup berdampingan dengan negara Israel.

Beda dengan Otorita Palestina yang berjuang untuk masa depan Palestina yang lebih baik, Hamas hanya menjanjikan rakyat Palestina peperangan, pertumpahan darah dan kesengsaraan yang tidak terarah.

Saatnya bagi Palestina untuk menentukan jalan yang akan mereka tempuh.

Israel membuka pintu bagi bantuan kemanusiaan

Untuk mencegah krisis kemanusiaan di Jalur Gaza, Perdana Menteri Ehud Olmert telah mengambil keputusan menyetujui proposal pembentukan keamanan untuk membuka pintu bagi bantuan kemanusiaan di Jalur Gaza yang bertujuan menolong para penduduk.

Sejak dimulainya Operasi “Cast Lead” – seperti yang telah diketahui – telah disalurkan ratusan ton perlengkapan, bahan-bahan dan makanan dalam jumlah yang sama dengan bantuan yang telah disalurkan di bulan-bulan sebelum Operasi, meskipun aktivitas Hamas dilakukan dalam konsentrasi penduduk dan meskipun pertempuran yang berlangsung melawan teroris Hamas menciptakan kesulitan pengiriman bantuan kepada para penduduk sipil tersebut.

Pintu Bantuan Kemanusiaan memerlukan pembukaan daerah geografis untuk beberapa waktu tertentu, di mana dalam masa itu para penduduk bisa menerima bantuan serta melengkapi kebutuhannya. Rincian selengkapnya akan diputuskan oleh Koordinator dari Kegiatan Pemerintah di daerah territorial.

Saat ini untuk pertamakalinya sejak awal operasi darat perbatasan di Jalur Gaza dibuka kembali aktivitasnya. Bantuan kemanusiaan, yang merupakan komponen dalam operasi militer, memfasilitasi bergeraknya 49 truk bermuatan bantuan kemanusiaan. Bantuan yang ditransfer ini terdiri dari komoditas makanan, perlengkapan medis dan obat-obatan. Hari ini World Food Programme memulai pengiriman komoditas ke Jalur Gaza setelah dua hari beristirahat. Besok Kerem Shalom dijadwalkan dibuka untuk 80 kiriman bantuan melalui laut.

Dan juga, depot bahan bakar Nahal beroperasi dan membawa 215.000 liter solar (yang diperlukan untuk pembangkit listrik Gaza), 93.000 liter solar untuk penggunaan berbagai organisasi PBB dan 50 ton gas memasak untuk keperluan rumah tangga.

Sesuai permintaan Komite Internasional Palang Merah Israel juga difasilitasi akses dua orang dokter dan dua orang perawat ke Jalur Gaza, melalui perbatasan Erez.

Operasi “Cast Lead”

Operasi IDF berlanjut di malam hari dengan turunnya pasukan infantri besar, tank, mesin-mesin, artileri dan pasukan intelijen yang beroperasi di sepanjang Jalur Gaza. Selama saling tembak pada malam hari puluhan mata-mata bersenjata Hamas dilumpuhkan oleh IDF. Pesawat-pesawat IAF menghantam lebih dari 45 target termasuk, terowongan, fasilitas penyimpanan senjata, pasukan peluncur misil dan sejumlah daerah peluncuran misil. Seorang pejabat IDF dan seorang tentara IDF menjadi korban luka serius semalam. Sementara sebanyak 28 orang tentara lainnya terluka ringan.

Alasan-alasan dilaksanakannya aksi darat

Seminggu lalu, Israel memulai Operasi “Cast Lead” yang disertai operasi udara terhadap daerah komando Hamas dan tempat-tempat peluncuran senjata, dengan tujuan untuk menghambat serangan lebih lanjut terhadap warga Israel. Akan tetapi, Hamas terus menembaki warga Israel, minggu ini saja, Hamas telah meluncurkan 417 roket dan mortar (termasuk 61 senjata mematikan roket Grad Kaythusa). Israel harus mengambil langkah-langkah lebih lanjut untuk memastikan berhentikannya roket dan misil yang telah menghujani kota-kota di Israel selama 8 tahun ini.

Misi operasi darat

Misi utama angkatan darat ini adalah menguasai daerah utama tempat peluncuran roket di Jalur Gaza dan untuk melawan operasi para teroris di sana. Israel tidak bermaksud untuk mengambil kembali kekuasaaan di Jalur Gaza. Ekspansi operasi ini semata-mata ditujukan untuk mencapai tujuan yang telah disebutkan.

Korban sipil dan bantuan kemanusiaan

Setiap jatuhnya korban yang tidak bersalah adalah sebuah tragedi, namun statistik menunjukkan bahwa metode operasi Israel meminimalkan korban penduduk sipil. Palestina dan PBB melaporkan rasio korban penduduk sipil adalah sekitar 12%. Angka ini jauh lebih rendah dari kejadian serupa yang pernah terjadi sebelumnya; termasuk bom NATO di Kosovo dan Afganistan, padahal situasi di Gaza jauh lebih sulit. Israel tidak ingin melukai penduduk sipil Palestina yang tinggal di Gaza. Israel melakukan segala daya upaya untuk menghindari krisis kemanusiaan yang terjadi di Gaza. Bahkan pada kenyataannya, berbagai kelompok bantuan internasional telah meminta Israel untuk menangguhkan pengiriman bantuannya karena tidak ada cukup tempat di gudang-gudang mereka di Gaza.

Selama minggu pertama pelaksanaan operasi ini, sebanyak 400 truk yang membawa suplai bantuan kemanusiaan, termasuk makanan dan perlengkapan medis, dan juga 10 ambulans memasuki Jalur Gaza dari Israel.

Seperti biasanya, dalam setiap operasi, Israel melalukan segala-galanya untuk menghindari terluka dan terlibatnya penduduk Palestina. Tindakan yang dilakukan termasuk dengan dikeluarkannya peringatan sebelum serangan, memberikan penduduk sipil Palestina waktu untuk meninggalkan daerah yang menjadi sasaran target, meskipun hal ini menanggung resiko pada serangan mendadak dan menambah resiko bagi angkatan bersenjata Israel.

Sekolah di Gaza (Jabeliya)

Kemarin, dilaporkan 30 orang Palestina terbunuh dalam tragedi di sebuah sekolah di Jebaliya.

Investigasi IDF menemukan bahwa teroris Hamas menembakkan lima bom misil dari sekolah diarahkan pada tentara Israel yang membalas kembali tembakan tersebut ke sumbernya. Tembakan balasan Israel mendarat di luar sekolah, namun disusul serangkaian ledakan setelahnya, mengindikasikan kemungkinan adanya munisi dan bahan peledak di dalam bangunan. Intelijen menemukan di antara yang tewas terdapat Immad Abu Iskar dan Hassan Aby Iskan, dua orang yang dikenal sebagai juru tembak misil.

Israel melakukan segala daya upaya untuk menghindari jatuhnya korban sipil. Rendahnya rasio korban penduduk sipil dalam 11 hari pertempuran (12% sesuai laporan AP dan Kementerian Kesehatan Palestina (5 Januari 2009) – lihat : http://www.kjrh.com/news/world/story/Death-toll-climbs-Israel-pushes-deeper-into-Gaza/O049WnBjbECby_RqLIa1WQ.cspx) menunjukkan dengan jelas bahwa tidak ada maksud untuk melukai penduduk sipil dan upaya yang telah dilakukan hanyalah menargetkan personil Hamas beserta infrastrukturnya. Akan tetapi, pertempuran berlangsung terus, Hamas, ditekan oleh keberhasilan militer Israel, akan melakukan segalanya untuk mendapatkan penghargaan militer dan moral, termasuk dengan menyembunyikan munisi di sekolah dan meluncurkan tembakan dari bangunan yang penuh dengan penduduk sipil.

Ini bukanlah pertamakalinya Hamas menggunakan sekolah-sekolah PBB sebagai basis penembakan

Israel bersimpati atas setiap jatuhnya korban jiwa. Akan tetapi tidak ada yang dapat lagi dilakukan saat penduduk sipil dengan sengaja ditempatkan pada baku tembak, saat tujuan Hamas adalah untuk menyebabkan sebanyak mungkin kematian penduduk sipil dalam mendapatkan simpati publik.

Tragedi ini terjadi karena Hamas secara konsisten menggunakan penduduk sipilnya sebagai tameng hidup.

Cara terbaik untuk menghentikan pemanfaatan orang Palestina sebagai tameng hidup adalah dengan bersatunya komunitas internasional dan menuntut Hamas untuk menghentikan tindakan yang biadab ini.

T : Pertempuran seperti apa yang telah diciptakan oleh Hamas ?

Menlu Livni : Mereka mengharapkan operasi militer Israel. Kita ketahui bahwa mereka memiliki pasukan. Ada pasukan kecil di sana, mereka mengunakan pasukan untuk menyelundupkan semakin banyak persenjataan, bukan hanya misil. Mereka menyerang tentara kami dengan misil dan kita tahu ada beberapa ledakan terjadi di berbagai tempat, tidak hanya di kota, namun juga di tempat-tempat yang mereka pikir tentara Israel akan lewati.

T : Apakah mereka juga mencoba menculik para tentara ?

Menlu Livni : Ya, mereka mengumumkannya. Mereka memperingatkan Israel untuk tidak memasuki operasi militer karena mereka akan menculik para tentara.

T : Berapa lama hal ini akan berlangsung ?

Menlu Livni : Sampai kami membuat Hamas tak berdaya, sampai kami yakin bahwa mereka mengerti Israel tidak ingin hidup dalam kenyataan warganya menjadi sasaran. Ini adalah kombinasi kemampuan militer dan motivasi dan kami bekerja dalam kedua sisi tersebut.

T : Tampaknya Anda tidak terlalu keras mengenai hal ini dan para pejabat Israel juga tampak tidak terlalu keras, namun saya ingat situasi yang sama pada awal peperangan Anda dengan Hizbulah di tahun 2006. Sangat dikenal luas bahwa perang tersebut ditangani dengan buruk. Bahkan Andapun mengkritik Perdana Menteri atas penanganannya pada perang Hizbullah. Mengapa yang kali ini berbeda ?

Menlu Livni : Karena Israel adalah negara yang belajar dari pengalaman. Saya tahu itu.

T : Anda katakan hal ini akan membantu proses perdamaian. Namun tiap kali Israel maju dalam perang, apakah itu melawan Hizbullah atau melawan Hamas, pada akhirnya membantu mereka yang menjadi korban sasaran dari perang, secara khusus, berapa banyak penduduk sipil terbunuh oleh tentara Anda di Gaza.

Menlu Livni : Saya dapat mengerti, kenyataannya – bukan gambaran yang berasal dari Gaza, namun kenyataan – dapat memprovokasi demonstrasi di berbagai bagian dunia. khususnya di dunia Arab. Saya dapat mengerti empati publik dan opini publik di berbagi tempat di dunia terhadap Palestina. Kami tidak melawan Palestina – kami melawan Hamas, sebuah organisasi teroris yang menguasai Jalur Gaza. Benar, terdapat pula korban penduduk sipil, namun kami berusaha menghindari korban penduduk sipil, meskipun hal ini tidaklah mudah, sementara Hamas menjadikan penduduk sipil kami sebagai sasaran.

T : Sekarang, 4 orang Israel telah terbunuh. Hal ini sangat buruk dan semua orang tahu bahwa kebanyakan orang menerima Hamas telah memprovokasi serangan Anda. Akan tetapi, lebih dari 400 orang Palestina telah terbunuh. Kebanyakan dari mereka anak-anak, juga perempuan. Lebih dari 2000 orang terluka. Kebanyakan anak-anak, perempuan dan orang tua. Begitu banyak penduduk sipil menjadi korban. Apa yang akan Anda lakukan untuk menghindarinya, dan dapatkah Anda dalam hal ini, dapatkah Anda menghindarinya ?

Menlu Livni : Apa yang kami lakukan adalah menghindarinya, dan kami menempatkan tentara kami dalam resiko karena ada beberapa target yang angkatan udara kami tidak serang dari udara berada di daerah pemukiman padat – ini yang kami lakukan.

T : Otorita Palestina mengutarakan kegetiran tentang tidak proporisonalnya penggunaan tentara Israel. Apa pandangan Anda pada proporsionalitas tindakan Israel ?

Menlu Livni : Saya ingin sampaikan bahwa saya tidak dapat mengerti makna proporsionalitas yang dibutuhkan. Maksud saya, mereka menjadikan sekolah sebagai sasaran pada minggu lalu, di Beersheba Israel. Apakah menurut Anda reaksi proprosional adalah dengan menjadikan sekolah di sana sebagai sasaran ? Kami tidak akan melakukan hal ini. Mereka menjadikan penduduk sipil sebagai sasaran – kami tidak melakukan hal ini. Jadi ukuran satu-satunya yang kami ambil adalah untuk membuat mereka mengerti bahwa hal ini perlu dihentikan. Ini merupakan ekspresi hak sebuah negara untuk mempertahankan diri. Kami mencoba gencatan senjata. Kami mengambil keputusan untuk tidak membuat sasaran, kami mengambil keputusan untuk tidak membalas dendam. Namun hal ini tidak berhasil. Jadi, inilah saatnya kami harus mengatakan, ya. Kami tidak membalas atas satu demi satu misil yang diarahkan ke Israel. Hal ini harus dihentikan. Jadi pertanyaan tentang proporionalitas, saya rasa, telah disalahgunakan terhadap Israel.

T : Anda katakan bahwa proporsionalitas ini telah disalahgunakan terhadap Israel, namun Anda sediri mengetahui bahwa hal ini memainkan peranan, karena akan dilihat berapa lama Anda dapat bertahan.

Menlu Livni : Benar. Saya setuju. Khalayak khususnya dunia Arab dan juga negara-negara Eropa dapat mempengaruhi pilihan para pemimpin yang mengerti. Para pemimpin internasional mengerti apa yang kami lakukan. Ada pula tempat-tempat lain di dunia di mana negara-negara tersebut memerangi terror seperti yang kami lakukan di Jalur Gaza. Jadi, jawaban atas pertanyaan anda, adalah : Ya. Sangat jelas banyak kepemimpinan internasional akan terpengaruh opini publik, mungkin pula oleh media. Dan saya rasa, tekanan pada Israel akan menjadi semakin kuat dalam beberapa hari mendatang.

T : Banyak orang mengusulkan adanya gencatan senjata. Apakah Anda akan menerima usulan ini ?

Menlu Livni : Ada satu hal yang membuat saya frustasi – ide yang mengatakan bahwa ”Israel dan Hamas harus berhenti, harus ada gencatan senjata antara Israel dan Hamas.” Hal ini tidaklah sama. Saya tidak mau menempatkan Israel dan Hamas dalam paket yang sama atau bahkan menggunakan kata-kata yang sama, seperti yang Anda katakan sebelumnya, kami sedang menyatakan hak kami untuk mempertahankan diri. Israel adalah negara yang menjadi anggota komunitas internasional, sementara Hamas adalah organisasi teroris. Israel bertindak atas Hamas karena Hamas menjadikan Israel sasaran dan mereka tahu apa yang harus dilakukan untuk menghentikannya.

T : Jadi Anda akan meneruskannya sampai mereka berhenti ?

Menlu Livni : Mereka harus berhenti.

T : Bila tidak ?

Menlu Livni : Israel akan mengambil tindakan yang diperlukan. Bisa saja selama operasi ini, atau dilakukan kemudian, namun pada akhirnya, mereka perlu memahami bahwa saat ini kami memutuskan untuk mengubah keadaan bagi warga kami. Masalahnya bukanlah melawan penduduk di Jalur Gaza dan bukan pula mengenai siapa yang menguasai Gaza, melainkan selama kami dapat hidup dengan tenang dan damai di Israel.

Eksploitasi Hamas atas Penduduk Sipil Sebagai Tameng Hidup

Studi ini mempelajari bahwa Hamas dan organisasi teroris lainnya di Jalur Gaza secara ekstensif memanfaatkan penduduk sipil Palestina sebagai tameng hidup. Hal ini menggambarkan bahwa organisasi teroris membangun infrastuktur militer besar di Jalur Gaza, termasuk tempat penyimpanan roket besar dan misil yang digunakan untuk menjadikan penduduk Israel di bagian selatan sebagai sasaran (sejak tahun 2001-2008 lebih dari 8.000 roket dan misil telah ditembakkan pada kawasan pemukiman Israel). Infrastruktur militer teroris disembunyikan di dalam dan berada di sekitar rumah penduduk serta menyebar di lokasi sekitar Jalur Gaza, tempat yang diperkirakan ditinggali lebih dari 1.4 juta orang, yang merupakan salah satu kawasan pemukiman yang padat di dunia.

Diperkirakan, terus menerusnya penggunaan penduduk sipil sebagai tameng hidup bertujuan untuk mengurangi kelemahan Hamas dan organisasi teroris Palestina lainnya dengan diperolehnya kesempatan mendapatkan sejenis imunitas dari aktifitas antiterorisme IDF, karena mereka sadar bahwa Israel sedapat mungkin akan menghindari jatuhnya korban penduduk sipil. Hal ini juga bermaksud memungkinkan Hamas dan organisasi teroris lainnya mendapat keuntungan propaganda politik dari pertempuran karena segenap hati dan segenap pikiran menyatakan Israel sebagai pelaksana operasi terhadap penduduk yang tidak bersalah ini. Doktrin organisasi teroris yang menggunakan tameng hidup diprakarsai oleh taktik Hizbullah di Libanon dan melalui pelajaran yang mereka terima dari kampanye para teroris, yang mulai mereka gunakan terhadap Israel sejak tahun 2000.

Hari ini Hamas dan organisasi teroris lainnya memiliki sebanyak kira-kira 20.000 mata-mata bersenjata di Jalur Gaza dengan berbagai jenis keterampilan. Mereka memiliki senjata ringan, senjata anti-tank, perlengkapan ledak yang sangat kuat, roket dan misil. Infrastruktur militer mereka terletak di lokasi penduduk (dengan kota Gaza sebagai urat nadi) dan delapan kamp pengungsi yang padat penduduk di sepanjang Jalur Gaza.

Hamas dan organisasi teroris lainnya meniru dan mengembangkan doktrin perang Hizbullah, yang didasarkan atas eksploitasi penduduk sipil sebagai tameng hidup. Mereka menggunakannya pada kondisi unik di arena Gaza, yang secara topografi lebih mudah dibandingkan dengan yang berada di selatan Libanon. Menggunakan penduduk sipil sebagai tameng hidup adalah kejahatan perang, pelanggaran mutlak atas hukum konflik bersenjata dan kejahatan terhadap hak asasi manusia. Roket dan misil yang secara rutin ditembakkan dari kawasan berpenduduk padat serta berdekatan dengan tempat-tempat dan fasilitias umum (termasuk institusi pendidikan dan mesjid) memerlukan perlindungan khusus dari Konvensi PBB. Dalam skenario serangan ke Jalur Gaza, organisasi teroris akan menggunakan setting penduduk dan kamp pengungsi sebagai tempat utama peluncuran senjata mereka.

Studi ini (rampung selama minggu pertama Operasi Cast Lead) menunjukkan banyak contoh bagaimana penduduk sipil digunakan sebagai tameng hidup selama teroris menyerang Israel dan perang terhadap Israel. Contoh-contoh ini berdasarkan pengalaman yang dikumpulkan Israel dalam melawan terorisme di Jalur Gaza, termasuk minggu pertama pelaksanaan Operasi. Penemuan yang ditemukan adalah sebagai berikut :

Personil militer dan keamanan, fasilitas-fasilitas dan instalasi terletak di dalam konsentrasi penduduk yang padat (termasuk rumah tinggal dan bangunan umum seperti sekolah, mesjid dan rumah sakit) : Infrastruktur militer secara besar-besaran diserang oleh IDF dalam Operasi Cast Lead, termasuk mata-mata teroris, senjata dan fasilitas serta instalasi mereka : markas besar, basis, kantor, gudang penyimpanan senjata, terowongan, jaringan bawah tanah, mesin-mesin, bengkel dan ruang bawah tanah. Membangun infrastruktur militer dalam pemukiman padat penduduk dapat menyebabkan “kecelakaan kerja” dan menjadikannya ujung tombak dalam pertempuran saat tentara Israel melaksanakan aktivitas antiterorisme atau saat ada konflik kekerasan internal di Palestina.
Roket dan misil ditembakkan pada pusat-pusat pemukiman dari dalam maupun daerah yang dekat dengan tempat tinggal penduduk dan kadang kala dari sekolah atau mesjid. Pasukan peluncur roket dengan sengaja menempatkan peluncurnya dekat rumah-rumah untuk menyamarkan situasi dan melindungi diri dari IDF. Serangan yang dilakukan oleh teroris sering mengganggu kehidupan sehari-hari penduduk Palestina dan juga membahayakan mereka. Seringkali roket meledak saat sedang disiapkan dan dalam beberapa kasus roket Kassam buatan rumahan (yang kualitas teknisnya rendah) jatuh di Jalur Gaza, bukan di Israel, menewaskan dan melukai penduduk sipil setempat.
Teroris melawan IDF dari dalam tempat pemukiman dan fasilitas umum, dan membawa ambulans untuk mengevakuasi mata-mata teroris dari medan pertempuran. Dalam Operasi Cast Lead, mata-mata teroris memanfaatkan pengungsi dalam fasilitas umum seperti rumah sakit, sekolah dan mesjid. Pada Operasi IDF yang dilaksanakan beberapa tahun ini, termasuk Operasi Hot Winter di bulan Maret 2008 dan Operasi Autumn Clouds di bulan Oktober 2006, IDF seringkali berhadapan dengan mata-mata teroris yang menyerang dari dalam rumah penduduk. Mereka adalah para pendukung, termasuk kaum perempuan dan anak-anak, yang berpatroli dan menjalankan misi intelijen. Dalam beberapa kasus mata-mata teroris berpakaian sipil, menjadikannya sulit dikenali antara teroris yang menyamar dan penduduk sipil asli. Selama Operasi Hot Winter IDF menemukan senjata yang disembunyikan di sebuah mesjid di kamp pengungsi Jabaliya. Selama pertempuran di pemukiman Al-Zeitun di tahun 2004, para teroris menggunakan ambulans UNRWA untuk mengevakuasi seorang Palestina yang terluka dan para mata-mata teroris. Semua ini merupakan pelanggaran mutlak atas hukum perang dan eksploitasi dari perlindungan khusus yang dimiliki tempat-tempat ibadah, instalasi medik dan kendaraan.
Penduduk sipil, termasuk perempuan dan anak-anak, dengan sengaja digunakan sebagai tameng hidup untuk melindungi mata-mata teroris yang rumahnya takut diserang oleh IDF. Selama Operasi Cast Lead dan di banyak contoh di waktu lampau, organsisasi teroris telah mengeksploitasi peringatan IDF pada warga sipil untuk mengevakuasi tempat tinggalnya sebelum serangan, dengan mengirimkan anak-anak dan pemuda ke lokasi-lokasi yang dimaksud, menyadari bahwa IDF tidak akan dengan sengaja menyerang penduduk sipil. Perdana Menteri Hamas Ismail Haniya dan banyak pemimpin Hamas lainnya (seperti misalya Nizar Rayyan, yang tewas pada Operasi Cast Lead) telah sesumbar tentang penggunaan taktik tameng hidup mereka.
Teroris mengadakan pelatihan militer, latihan dan demonstasi pertempuran, penting untuk meningkatkan kemampuan tempur mereka dan meningkatkan moral, di tengah konsentrasi penduduk (di mana teroris merasa lebih aman daripada berada dalam situasi yang seharusnya). Mereka membahayakan kehidupan penduduk sipil, mengacaukan rutinitas sehari-hari, mengakibatkan berbagai kecelakaan kerja (penembakan random, ledakan) dan juga aktivitas antiterorisme IDF. Penduduk Gaza telah beberapa kali menyatakan permohonan pada organisasi teroris untuk menghentikan aktivitas ini, namun tidak berhasil. Latihan dan demo pertempuran meningkat dalam 6 bulan masa tenang sebelum Operasi Cast Lead.
Perempuan dan anak-anak digunakan sebagai tameng hidup. Organisasi teroris mengirim 200 wanita untuk menyelamatkan belasan mata-mata dari mesjid Nasser di Beit Hanoun sebelah utara Jalur Gaza dalam aksi IDF di bulan November 2006. Para teroris berbaur dengan para wanita, memanfaatkan kenyataan bahwa IDF tidak akan menembak sembarangan pada kelompok wanita, dan melarikan diri dari daerah pertempuran. Dan lagi, selama pertempuran dengan IDF, beberapa waktu yang lalu di Jalur Gaza, IDF seringkali menemukan para teroris menembaki mereka ketika mereka dikelilingi oleh anak-anak dan orang dewasa, terkadang atas inisiatif mereka dan kadang atas aba-aba para teroris (kejadian ini terdokumentasi dan tersaji di bagian belakang artikel ini). Wanita dan anak-anak juga digunakan dalam operasi-operasi logistik untuk melaksanakan serangan para teroris (mengumpulkan informasi, menyelundupkan senjata, serangan-serangan bom bunuh diri dll). Taktik-taktik tersebut kemungkinan digunakan kembali selama operasi Cast Lead

Penduduk sipil jalur Gaza membayar harga tinggi dengan terjadinya kecelakaan perorangan dan kematian (studi ini mendokumentasikan tingginya korban akibat aktivitas teroris) dan gangguan pada kegiatan sehari-hari. Di luar isu penggunaan penduduk sebagai tameng hidup, seluruh populasi Gaza membayar mahal karena kebijakan Hamas, karena setelah Hamas mengambil alih Jalur Gaza di bulan Juni tahun 2007, menjadikan lebih dari 1,4 juta penduduk Gaza sandera atas ideologi Islam radikal dan strategi menjadikan mereka sebagai pihak yang membantunya. Hamas menyeret mereka ke dalam perang tanpa akhir dengan Israel, konfrontasi dengan Otoritas Palestina pimpinan Mahmoud Abbas, penurunan hubungan dengan Mesir dan negara Arab lainnya, dan isolasi dari komunitas Internasional.

Kontradiksi dasar antara kebutuhan penduduk dan kebijakan Hamas diperlihatkan secara jelas dengan penyerangan oleh Hamas dan kelompok teroris lainnya pada perbatasan antara Jalur Gaza dan Israel, yang merupakan jalur hidup untuk penduduk Gaza, dan karena berbagai kesulitan yang timbul oleh Operasi Hamas. Walaupun secara bertahun-tahun Hamas mencoba mengaburkan situasi Jalur Gaza sebagai krisis kemanusiaan dan bahkan “Holocaust”, dengan melakukan serangan teror menyerang Israel yang menyediakan kebutuhan dasar penduduk Gaza. Selama bertahun tahun perbatasan Kerem Shalom, Sufa, Karni, Nahal Oz dan Erez, yang merupakan jalur utama untuk suplai kebutuhan vital dan bahan bakar, telah diserang oleh roket, misil dan percobaan serangan bom bunuh diri yang membawa banyak korban. Penembakan roket dan misil ini meningkat selama perjanjian gencatan senjata masih berlangsung. Sebagai tambahan, organisasi teroris ini telah menyatakan secara terbuka bahwa mereka menargetkan pembangkit listrik Ashkelon, yang menyediakan 65% listrik Jalur Gaza.

Di masa lalu, penggunaan penduduk sebagai tameng hidup oleh Hamas dan terus menerusnya pengabaian kebutuhan hidup penduduknya telah menuai kritikan tajam dari penduduk Jalur Gaza (walaupun Hamas berusaha meminimalkannya melalui media yang dikuasainya), dan juga Otoritas Palestina dan Mesir. Hamas mengacuhkan kritik internal dan eksternal, menolak untuk mengubah kebijakannya dan semakin sering memanfaatkan kekurangan, kemiskinan dan penderitaan di Jalur Gaza sebagai bahan kampanye media untuk menyerang Israel, Mesir dan Otoritas Palestina.

Selama operasi Cast Lead, yang dimulai pada 27 Desember 2008, IDF telah melaksanakan serangan presisi pada infrastruktur militer yang dibangun ditengah-tengah penduduk sipil. Serangan udara Israel dari udara dan laut terhadap Hamas (dan organisasi teroris lainnya) yang terletak di antara pemukiman penduduk dapat diterima menurut hukum Internasional. Hal tersebut diambil karena Negara Israel perlu memberikan rasa aman pada penduduknya dan menjamin kesejahteraan dan kebutuhan dasar kehidupan dan keamanan sejalan dengan prinsip pertempuran bersenjata. Untuk delapan tahun rakyat Israel telah dihujani roket dan mortar, dan juga berbagai bentuk terorisme, semuanya berasal dari Hamas dan berbagai organisasi teror yang mengontrol Jalur Gaza dan beroperasi dari dalamnya.

Hamas dan berbagai organisasi teroris lainnya, untuk kepentingan mereka, menjalankan kejahatan perang dan kejahatan atas kemanusiaan dengan secara sengaja dan sembarangan menembakkan serangkaian roket pada target penduduk sipil serta menyebabkan teror yang menyedihkan, kematian dan kehancuran dengan pemanfaatan penduduk sipil di Jalur Gaza sebagai tameng hidup. Semua ini merupakan pelanggaran atas prinsip dasar yang membedakan antara pejuang dan non-pejuang, yang merupakan batu penjuru hukum perang bersenjata. Terserah pada komunitas internasional untuk menghadapi organisasi teroris dan negara-negara yang mensponsori serta mendukung mereka (khususnya Iran dan Suriah) sesuai dengan seluruh perlengkapan politik serta hukum yang mereka miliki untuk menyelesaikannya.

Penulisan studi ini dimulai pada pertengahan bulan 2008 dan dirampungkan pada akhir minggu pertama Operation Cast Lead, dengan diawalinya serangan darat IDF ke Jalur Gaza. Analisa pemanfaatan penduduk sipil sebagai tameng hidup dan banyak contoh lainnya yang telah disebutkan adalah berdasarkan pengalaman Israel bertempur menghadapi Hamas dan organisasi teroris lainnya yang menguasai dan beroperasi di Jalur Gaza. Juga tercatat beberapa contoh dari minggu pertama Operasi Cast Lead, yang tentu saja perlu dilengkapi saat operasi di Jalur Gaza ini berakhir.

Surat terbuka bagi orang Indonesia yang berdemonstrasi terhadap Israel

Saya memikirkan orang-orang yang terlibat dalam demonstrasi ini. Apakah Anda tahu yang menjadi latar belakang konflik ini ? Menurut Anda bagaimana solusi bagi masalah antara Israel dan Palestina ? Mengapa mereka memilih Israel dan bukannya Hamas sebagai pihak yang bertanggung jawab atas keamanan dan masa depan normal bagi Palestina ? Saya ingin Anda membaca ini, mendengarkan ini. Dan bila Anda ingin melancarkan protes – silakan, namun lakukanlah dengan pengertian, bukan hanya kata-kata kosong dan propaganda.

Beberapa mengatakan : kami demonstrasi karena kami ingin Palestina memiliki negara sendiri dan tidak hidup dalam penjajahan Israel

Bahkan untuk mulai pembicaraan tentang berakhirnya konflik Israel – Palestina, seseorang perlu menerima konsep solusi dua negara. Konsep dua negara ini artinya Israel dan Palestina hidup berdampingan satu dengan yang lainnya dengan damai. Saat para perwakilan Israel dan Palestina mulai membicarakan perdamaian, dalam perjanjian Oslo di tahun 1993, ini adalah dasar dari negosiasi. Mengakhiri semua permusuhan, adanya teritorial bersama atas klaim historis dan berbagi daerah. Pemerintah Indonesia juga mendukung gagasan ini saat Indonesia bergabung dengan para pemimpin negara dalam pertemuan baru-baru ini (2008) di Annapolis yang bermaksud menyalakan kembali semangat negosiasi.

Israel secara formal dan dalam setiap forum menerima solusi dua negara. Negosiasi untuk kesepakatan telah dilaksanakan bersama Otorita Palestina selama beberapa tahun terakhir.

Akan tetapi, hal yang paling mendasar pada Hamas adalah menolak keberadaan Israel, untuk menghapuskan Israel dengan segenap kekuatan. Negosiasi bukanlah pilihan, tidak ada yang dapat dinegosiasikan mengenai hal ini. Solusi dua negara bahkan merupakan sebuah kemungkinan.

Jadi, sederhananya, untuk memberikan pada Hamas apa yang mereka inginkan – saya harus mati, demikian juga dengan semua 7 juta orang Israel lainnya. Lalu, saat tidak ada lagi Israel – mereka akan menghentikan pengeboman. Tentu saja, untuk saya, ini bukanlah sebuah pilihan.

Jangan cuma perhatikan kata-kata saya. Berikut ini adalah Piagam Hamas:

>> Tidak ada solusi untuk pertanyaan Palestina kecuali melalui Jihad. Inisiatif , proposal dan konferensi internasional semuanya membuang waktu dan upaya sia-sia..

Memang, Hamas telah melakukan segalanya untuk merusak harapan kedamaian di kawasan serta merusak pembicaraan perdamaian antara Israel dengan Otorita Palestina.

Di tahun 1994-96 bom bunuh diri Hamas mengalihkan upaya proses perdamaian Oslo.

Tanpa aksi terror Hamas, saya yakin Palestina telah menjadi sebuah negara sejak beberapa tahun lalu.

Hamas menguasai Gaza dengan senjata kekerasan dan masih tetap membunuh anggota Fatah. Anggota Fatah melarikan diri ke Israel setelah serangan Hamas baru-baru ini di bulan Agustus.

Saya ingin menyampaikan beberapa alasan tindak operasi ini. Mohon simak dan coba renungkan bila Indonesia mengalami situasi yang sama, akankah Indonesia melakukan hal yang sama dengan yang dilakukan oleh Israel?

Selama 8 tahun dan khususnya selama 3 tahun terakhir sejak Hamas mengambil alih Gaza, kota-kota di bagian selatan Israel telah hidup dalam tempat-tempat perlindungan karena ancaman roket dan tembakan misil terus menerus. Serangan-serangan ini berlangsung dengan sebanyak 90 misil dalam satu hari. Selama bertahun-tahun Israel berusaha menyelesaikan masalah ini dengan cara lain. Israel menghadap PBB untuk mendapatkan bantuan, pada Mesir dan Turki untuk mediasi, namun hal ini tidaklah membantu. Kesepakatan gencatan senjata pendek dalam 6 bulan terakhir digunakan oleh Hamas untuk mempersenjatai diri dan setelah habis masa gencatan senjata, ratusan misil dan roket diluncurkan kembali ke kota-kota di Israel.

Sekali lagi, tidak perlu percaya begitu saja, simaklah yang disampaikan Menteri Luar Negeri Mesir berkenaan dengan hal yang sama :

Dan harus saya tekankan – ini bukanlah perkampungan, ini bukanlah kota-kota dalam teritorial 1967, ini adalah kota-kota di dalam Israel.

Akankah pemerintah Indonesia membiarkan rakyatnya hidup dalam tempat-tempat perlindungan selama bertahun-tahun dibom setiap harinya oleh sebuah organisasi yang memproklamirkan tujuannya untuk menghancurkan Indonesia ? Dan ini terjadi selama 8 tahun. Bukankah Indonesia, dalam situasi yang sama, juga akan mengirimkan tentaranya untuk melindungi rakyatnya?

Foto dari Gaza menyedihkan dan sangat buruk. Perang memang sangat buruk. Setiap orang yang terbunuh adalah tragedi, namun sekali lagi ingin saya jelaskan masalah ini dan saya ingin mengklarifikasi semuanya yang saya katakan sesuai dengan beberapa sumber:

Diberitakan hari ini (5/1) hanya terdapat 64 korban penduduk sipil dari 510 yang terbunuh. 12% dari korban adalah penduduk sipil. Ini bukan perkataan saya – berita ini dari laporan AP yang mengutip Kementrian Kesehatan Palestina :

Rasio ini jauh lebih rendah dari konflik bersenjata lainnya seperti Afganistan dan aksi NATO di Kosovo.

Saya tidak memandang remeh atas korban nyawa sebanyak 64 orang, tidak sama sekali. Gaza adalah kawasan yang sangat padat dan bila Hamas meluncurkan roket dan misil, Hamas akan melakukannya dari kawasan penduduk sipil. Perhatikan gambar berikut :

Israel memiliki permintaan yang sederhana, permintaan yang negara manapun di dunia, dalam posisinya akan lakukan : Penghentian roket dan misil yang ditembakkan dari Gaza.Penghentian penyelundupan senjata melalui perbatasan Mesir dengan penempatan pengamat internasional di sana.

Itu saja. Itulah yang dibutuhkan untuk menghentikan semuanya ini.

Israel tidak dapat kembali pada situasi yang sama di mana kota-kotanya di bagian selatan diserang bom setiap harinya. Akankah Indonesia atau Singapura menerima bila kotanya dalam ancaman bom secara terus menerus?

Indonesia memiliki posisi yang baik untuk membantu rakyat Palestina, karena Indonesia adalah negara Islam terbesar Indonesia dapat menekan Hamas untuk menyepakati kedua termin sederhana ini. Buatlah penekanan yang sama, demonstrasi dan pers yang ditujukan terhadap Israel serta untuk menekan pihak Hamas menghentikan penembakan. Mediasi antara Fatah dan Hamas untuk mencapai perjanjian Palestina dan kepemimpinan akan memungkinkan berjalannya pembicaraan perdamaian, sebarkan berita bahwa solusi bagi masalah Israel – Palestina bukanlah melalui Jihad namun pada solusi dua negara.

Saya adalah seorang diplomat Israel, karenanya saya mengerti bila anda mungkin curiga akan isi informasi ini, saya telah memberikan beberapa sumber non-Israel untuk mengklarifikasi pandangan-pandangan saya. Silakan memeriksa, memberi tanggapan bila Anda menemukan kesalahan atau informasi yang tidak tepat sekecil apapun. Silakan menulis atau bertanya pada saya, dalam Bahasa Indonesia maupun dalam Bahasa Inggris.

Auto Dialing Your 3G Modem

Enaknya ol sering-sering di kost.. hehe.. Semenjak Indosat meluncurkan produk barunya, im2 - broom, semua orang sepertinya beralih menggunakan produk tersebut serta meninggalkan warnet begitu saja. Ya pantas saja.. soalnya ol di kost pasti lebih nyaman ketimbang harus di warnet. Kalo dipikir-pikir lebih banyak manfaatnya make modem wireless daripada harus ke warnet. Selain masalah kenyamanan tadi, budget yang dibutuhkan untuk ol dikost jauh lebih efisien. Cuma modal 1 juta saja sudah dapat modem 3G Huawei. Trus starterpack-nya 150.000. Tinggal bayar pulsanya aja 100 ribu per-bulan, udah deh.. langsung ol..

Kalo menurut saya sih mending milih paket indosat m2 yang broom unlimited. Meski koneksi jadi turun mpe 64 Kbps setelah quota melebihi 2 Gb, kita masih bisa ol terus.. ya sekedar browsing aja sih.. kalo kecepatan donlot setelah quota habis kayanya sama deh kaya di warnet, cuma mpe 5 Kbps hihihi.. Tapi kalo quota masih dibawah 2 Gb, kecepatan donlotnya bisa mpe 50 Kbps.. lumayan tuh..

Tapi masalah pasti akan datang.. hikz.. setau-ku, kalo langit dah rada-rada mendung n cuaca dh g bersahabat.. koneksi kadang2 susah banget.. (apa hubungannya sama mendung bozz..???) Hihi.. g tau sih.. tp itu terjadi kalo dh mendung makanya q berkesimpulan gitu.. Kalo cuaca lagi cerah, koneksi sih nyambung n lancar aja..

Atas dasar masalah tersebut, q coba2 cari jalan buat konekin modem tersebut secara otomatis, biar tangan q g pegel, tiap saat harus klik tombol konek mpe modem tuh bener2 konek.. mending q klik iklan2 yg ada di bux.to, dapet uang cuy.. wkwkw.. Untuk sementara caranya sangat sederhana, tanpa software tambahan.. Langsung aja yukkk..

Start menu -> Control Panel -> Network Connection

Klik kanan pada tipe koneksi dial-up sesuai tipe modem-mu. Sebagai contoh, q menggunakan 3 USB Modem lalu pilih Properties.
Setelah jendela Properties muncul, pilih tab Options. Pada kotak Dialing options, hilangkan centang pada semua opsi. Pada kotak Redialing options set Redial attempts dengan nilai 999999999. Kemudian set Time between redial attempts dengan nilai 1 second. Set Idle time before hanging up dengan nilai never. Lalu centang opsi Redial if line is dropped.
Lalu klik OK.

Kemudian kembali ke langkah 1.

Klik kanan pada tipe koneksi dial-up sesuai tipe modem-mu lalu pilih Connect.

Beres deh..!! Gampang khan?? Nah dengan cara tersebut maka dengan otomatis modem 3G kamu akan terus menerus melakukan dialing sampai modem kamu konek. So g perlu klik terus2an tombol konek kl mo ol.. Jadi tenaga kita bs digunakan buat yg lain (Apa hayo..!! wkwk).

Tips tambahan : km bs create shortcut koneksi tsb dan menaruhnya di desktop dg cara klik kanan pada tipe koneksi, trus pada pop-up menu pilih Create Shortcut. Dengan cara tersebut, km akan lebih gampang melakukan koneksi :P

Etymology

The word Christmas originated as a compound meaning "Christ's Mass". It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038.^[4] "Cristes" is from Greek Christos and "mæsse" is from Latin missa. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, has been used as an abbreviation for Christ.^[8] Hence, Xmas is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas.

History

For many centuries, Christian writers accepted that Christmas was the actual date on which Jesus was born.^[9] However, in the early eighteenth century, some scholars began proposing alternative explanations. Isaac Newton argued that the date of Christmas was selected to correspond with the winter solstice,^[7] which in ancient times was marked on December 25.^[10] In 1743, German Protestant Paul Ernst Jablonski argued Christmas was placed on December 25 to correspond with the Roman solar holiday Dies Natalis Solis Invicti and was therefore a "paganization" that debased the true church.^[6] In 1889, Louis Duchesne suggested that the date of Christmas was calculated as nine months after the Annunciation on March 25, the traditional date of the conception of Jesus.^[11]

Reasons included the fact that less agricultural work needs to be done during the winter, as well as an expectation of better weather as spring approached.^[13] Modern Christmas customs include: gift-giving and merrymaking from Roman Saturnalia; greenery, lights, and charity from the Roman New Year; and Yule logs and various foods from Germanic feasts.^[14] Pagan Scandinavia celebrated a winter festival called Yule, held in the late December to early January period. As Northern Europe was the last part to Christianize, its pagan traditions had a major influence on Christmas. Scandinavians still call Christmas Jul. In English, the word Yule is synonymous with Christmas,^[15] a usage first recorded in 900.

Dies Natalis Solis Invicti

Dies Natalis Solis Invicti means "the birthday of the unconquered Sun." The use of the title Sol Invictus allowed several solar deities to be worshipped collectively, including Elah-Gabal, a Syrian sun god; Sol, the god of Emperor Aurelian; and Mithras, a soldiers' god of Persian origin.^[16] Emperor Elagabalus (218–222) introduced the festival, and it reached the height of its popularity under Aurelian, who promoted it as an empire-wide holiday.^[17] This day had held no significance in the Roman festive calendar until it was introduced in the third century.^[18]

The festival was placed on the date of the solstice because this was on this day that the Sun reversed its southward retreat and proved itself to be "unconquered." Several early Christian writers connected the rebirth of the sun to the birth of Jesus.^[4] "O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born...Christ should be born", Cyprian wrote.^[4] John Chrysostom also commented on the connection: "They call it the 'Birthday of the Unconquered'. Who indeed is so unconquered as Our Lord . . .?"^[4]

Patristic Development

The New Testament does not give a date for the birth of Jesus.^[19]^[4] Around AD 200, Clement of Alexandria wrote that a group in Egypt celebrated the nativity on Pachon 25.^[4] This corresponds to May 20.^[20] Tertullian (d. 220) does not mention Christmas as a major feast day in the Church of Roman Africa.^[4] In Chronographai, a reference work published in 221, Sextus Julius Africanus suggested that Jesus was conceived on the spring equinox.^[21] The equinox was March 25 on the Roman calendar, so this implied a birth in December.^[22] De Pascha Computus, a calendar of feasts produced in 243, gives March 28 as the date of the nativity.^[23] In 245, the theologian Origen of Alexandria stated that, "only sinners (like Pharaoh and Herod)" celebrated their birthdays.^[24] In 303, Christian writer Arnobius ridiculed the idea of celebrating the birthdays of gods, which suggests that Christmas was not yet a feast at this time.^[4]

Feast Established

The earliest reference to the celebration of the nativity on December 25 is found in the Chronography of 354, an illuminated manuscript compiled in Rome in 354.^[25] In the East, early Christians celebrated the birth of Christ as part of Epiphany (January 6), although this festival focused on the baptism of Jesus.^[26]

Christmas was promoted in the Christian East as part of the revival of Catholicism following the death of the pro-Arian Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. The feast was introduced to Constantinople in 379, and to Antioch in about 380. The feast disappeared after Gregory of Nazianzus resigned as bishop in 381, although it was reintroduced by John Chrysostom in about 400.^[4]

Middle Ages

In the Early Middle Ages, Christmas Day was overshadowed by Epiphany, which in the west focused on the visit of the magi. But the Medieval calendar was dominated by Christmas-related holidays. The forty days before Christmas became the "forty days of St. Martin" (which began on November 11, the feast of St. Martin of Tours), now known as Advent.^[27] In Italy, former Saturnalian traditions were attached to Advent.^[27] Around the 12th century, these traditions transferred again to the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25 – January 5); a time that appears in the liturgical calendars as Christmastide or Twelve Holy Days.^[27]

The prominence of Christmas Day increased gradually after Charlemagne was crowned Emperor on Christmas Day in 800. King Edmund the Martyr was anointed on Christmas in 855 and King William I of England was crowned on Christmas Day 1066.

By the High Middle Ages, the holiday had become so prominent that chroniclers routinely noted where various magnates celebrated Christmas. King Richard II of England hosted a Christmas feast in 1377 at which twenty-eight oxen and three hundred sheep were eaten.^[27] The Yule boar was a common feature of medieval Christmas feasts. Caroling also became popular, and was originally a group of dancers who sang. The group was composed of a lead singer and a ring of dancers that provided the chorus. Various writers of the time condemned caroling as lewd, indicating that the unruly traditions of Saturnalia and Yule may have continued in this form.^[27] "Misrule" — drunkenness, promiscuity, gambling — was also an important aspect of the festival. In England, gifts were exchanged on New Year's Day, and there was special Christmas ale.^[27]

Christmas during the Middle Ages was a public festival that incorporating ivy, holly, and other evergreens.^[28] Christmas gift-giving during the Middle Ages was usually between people with legal relationships, such as tenant and landlord.^[28]

Reformation into the 19th Century

During the Reformation, some Puritans condemned Christmas celebration as "trappings of popery" and the "rags of the Beast."^[29] The Roman Catholic Church responded by promoting the festival in a more religiously oriented form. Following the Parliamentarian victory over King Charles I during the English Civil War, England's Puritan rulers banned Christmas, in 1647.^[29] Pro-Christmas rioting broke out in several cities, and for weeks Canterbury was controlled by the rioters, who decorated doorways with holly and shouted royalist slogans.^[29] The Restoration of Charles II in 1660 ended the ban, but many clergymen still disapproved of Christmas celebration.

In Colonial America, the Puritans of New England disapproved of Christmas. Celebration was outlawed in Boston from 1659 to 1681. At the same time, Christian residents of Virginia and New York observed the holiday freely. Pennsylvania German Settlers, pre-eminently the Moravian settlers of Bethlehem, Nazareth and Lititz in Pennsylvania and the Wachovia Settlements in North Carolina, were enthusiastic celebrators of Christmas. The Moravians in Bethlehem had the first Christmas trees in America as well as the first Nativity Scenes. Christmas fell out of favor in the United States after the American Revolution, when it was considered an English custom.^[30] George Washington attacked Hessian mercenaries on Christmas during the Battle of Trenton in 1777. (Christmas being much more popular in Germany than in America at this time.) By the 1820s, sectarian tension had eased and British writers, including William Winstanly began to worry that Christmas was dying out. These writers imagined Tudor Christmas as a time of heartfelt celebration, and efforts were made to revive the holiday. Charles Dickens's book A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, played a major role in reinventing Christmas as a holiday emphasizing family, goodwill, and compassion as opposed to communal celebration and hedonistic excess.^[31] In America, interest in Christmas was revived in the 1820s by several short stories by Washington Irving which appear in his The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon and "Old Christmas", and by Clement Clarke Moore's 1822 poem A Visit From St. Nicholas (popularly known by its first line: Twas the Night Before Christmas).^[32] Irving's stories depicted harmonious warm-hearted holiday traditions he claimed to have observed in England. Although some argue that Irving invented the traditions he describes, they were widely imitated by his American readers. The poem A Visit from Saint Nicholas popularized the tradition of exchanging gifts and seasonal Christmas shopping began to assume economic importance.^[33] In reaction, this also started the cultural conflict of the holiday's spiritualism and its commercialism that some see as corrupting the holiday. In her 1850 book "The First Christmas in New England", Harriet Beecher Stowe includes a character who complains that the true meaning of Christmas was lost in a shopping spree.^[34] Christmas was declared a United States Federal holiday in 1870, signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Nativity of Jesus

The Nativity of Jesus refers to the Christian belief that the Messiah was born to the Virgin Mary. The story of Christmas is based on the biblical accounts given in the Gospel of Matthew, namely Matthew 1:18-Matthew 2:12 and the Gospel of Luke, specifically Luke 1:26-Luke 2:40. According to these accounts, Jesus was born to Mary, assisted by her husband Joseph, in the city of Bethlehem. According to popular tradition, the birth took place in a stable, surrounded by farm animals, though neither the stable nor the animals are mentioned in the Biblical accounts. However, a manger is mentioned in Luke 2:7 where it states "She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." Early iconographic representations of the nativity placed the stable and manger within a cave (located, according to tradition, under the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem). Shepherds from the fields surrounding Bethlehem were told of the birth by an angel, and were the first to see the child.^[35] Many Christians believe that the birth of Jesus fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament. Many modern scholars view the two Gospel accounts as theological fictions.^[36]

Remembering is a central way that Christians celebrate Christmas. There is a very long tradition of the Nativity of Jesus in art. The Eastern Orthodox Church practices the Nativity Fast in anticipation of the birth of Jesus, while much of the Western Church celebrates Advent. In some Christian denominations, children perform plays re-telling the events of the Nativity, or sing carols that reference the event. Some Christians also display a small re-creation of the Nativity, known as a Nativity scene, in their homes, using figurines to portray the key characters of the event. Live Nativity scenes and tableaux vivants are also performed, using actors and live animals to portray the event with more realism.^[37]

Nativity scenes traditionally include the Three Wise Men, Balthazar, Melchior, and Caspar, although their names and number are not referred to in the Biblical narrative, who are said to have followed a star, known as the Star of Bethlehem, found Jesus, and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.^[38] The including of the Magi in the nativity would be in conflict with the Biblical account, as it indicates that they found Jesus approximately two years after his birth, rather than on the exact day (Matt. 2:7–8, 16).

In the U.S., Christmas decorations at public buildings once commonly included Nativity scenes. This practice has led to many lawsuits, as groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union believe it amounts to the government endorsing a religion, which is prohibited by the United States Constitution. In 1984, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Lynch vs. Donnelly that a Christmas display (which included a Nativity scene) owned and displayed by the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island did not violate the First Amendment.^[39]

Santa Claus and Other Bringers of Gifts

Originating from Western culture, where the holiday is characterized by the exchange of gifts among friends and family members, some of the gifts are attributed to a character called Santa Claus (also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas or St. Nikolaus, Sinterklaas, Kris Kringle, Père Noël, Joulupukki, Babbo Natale, Weihnachtsmann, Saint Basil and Father Frost).

The popular image of Santa Claus was created by the German-American cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840–1902), who drew a new image annually, beginning in 1863. By the 1880s, Nast's Santa had evolved into the form we now recognize. The image was standardized by advertisers in the 1920s.^[40]

Father Christmas, who predates the Santa Claus character, was first recorded in the 15th century, but was associated with holiday merrymaking and drunkenness.^[41] In Victorian Britain, his image was remade to match that of Santa. The French Père Noël evolved along similar lines, eventually adopting the Santa image. In Italy, Babbo Natale acts as Santa Claus, while La Befana is the bringer of gifts and arrives on the eve of the Epiphany. It is said that La Befana set out to bring the baby Jesus gifts, but got lost along the way. Now, she brings gifts to all children. In some cultures Santa Claus is accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, or Black Peter. In other versions, elves make the toys. His wife is referred to as Mrs. Claus.

It is often claimed that the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus is the Dutch holyman and bringer of gifts Sinterklaas. During the American War of Independence the inhabitants of New York City, a former Dutch colonial town (New Amsterdam) which had been swapped by the Dutch for other territories, reinvented their Sinterklaas tradition, as Saint Nicholas was a symbol of the city's non-English past.^[42] The name Santa Claus supposedly is derived from older Dutch Sinte Klaas. However, the Saint Nicholas Society was not founded until 1835, almost half a century after the end of the American War of Independence.^[43] Moreover, a study of the "children's books, periodicals and journals" of New Amsterdam by Charles Jones revealed no references to Saint Nicholas or Sinterklaas.^[44] However, not all scholars agree with Jones's findings, which he reiterated in a booklength study in 1978;^[45] Howard G. Hageman, of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, maintains that the tradition of celebrating Sinterklaas in New York was alive and well from the early settlement of the Hudson Valley on.^[46]

The current tradition in several Latin American countries (such as Venezuela and Colombia) holds that while Santa makes the toys, he then gives them to the Baby Jesus, who is the one who actually delivers them to the children's homes. This story is meant to be a reconciliation between traditional religious beliefs and modern day globalization, most notably the iconography of Santa Claus imported from the United States.

In Alto Adige/Südtirol (Italy), Austria, Czech Republic, Southern Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Slovakia and Switzerland, the Christkind (Ježíšek in Czech, Jézuska in Hungarian and Ježiško in Slovak) brings the presents. The German St. Nikolaus is not identical with the Weihnachtsman (who is the German version of Santa Claus). St. Nikolaus wears a bishop's dress and still brings small gifts (usually candies, nuts and fruits) on December 6 and is accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht. Although many parents around the world routinely teach their children about Santa Claus and other gift bringers, some have come to reject this practice, considering it deceptive.^[47]

Decorations

In many countries there are many different types of decorations used depending on the traditions and available resources. The Christmas tree is often explained as a Christianization of pagan tradition and ritual surrounding the Winter Solstice, which included the use of evergreen boughs, and an adaptation of pagan tree worship.^[48] The English language phrase "Christmas tree" is first recorded in 1835^[41] and represents an importation from the German language. The modern Christmas tree tradition is believed to have begun in Germany in the 18th century^[48] though many argue that Martin Luther began the tradition in the 16th century.^[49]^[50] From Germany the custom was introduced to England, first via Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, and then more successfully by Prince Albert during the reign of Queen Victoria. Around the same time, German immigrants introduced the custom into the United States.^[51] Christmas trees may be decorated with lights and ornaments.

Since the 19th century, the poinsettia, a native plant from Mexico, has been associated with Christmas. Other popular holiday plants include holly, mistletoe, red amaryllis, and Christmas cactus. Along with a Christmas tree, the interior of a home may be decorated with these plants, along with garlands and evergreen foliage.

In Australia, North and South America, and to a lesser extent Europe, it is traditional to decorate the outside of houses with lights and sometimes with illuminated sleighs, snowmen, and other Christmas figures. Municipalities often sponsor decorations as well. Christmas banners may be hung from street lights and Christmas trees placed in the town square.^[52]

In the Western world, rolls of brightly colored paper with secular or religious Christmas motifs are manufactured for the purpose of wrapping gifts. The display of Christmas villages has also become a tradition in many homes during this season. Other traditional decorations include bells, candles, candy canes, stockings, wreaths, and angels.

In many countries a representation of the Nativity Scene is very popular, and people are encouraged to compete and create most original or realistic ones. Within some families, the pieces used to make the representation are considered a valuable family heirloom.

Christmas decorations are traditionally taken down on Twelfth Night, the evening of January 5.

The traditional colours of Christmas are pine green (evergreen), snow white, and heart red.

Christmas Stamps

A number of nations have issued commemorative stamps at Christmastime. Postal customers will often use these stamps to mail Christmas cards, and they are popular with philatelists. These stamps are regular postage stamps, unlike Christmas seals, and are valid for postage year-round. They usually go on sale some time between early October and early December, and are printed in considerable quantities.

In 1898 a Canadian stamp was issued to mark the inauguration of the Imperial Penny Postage rate. The stamp features a map of the globe and bears an inscription "XMAS 1898" at the bottom. In 1937, Austria issued two "Christmas greeting stamps" featuring a rose and the signs of the zodiac. In 1939, Brazil issued four semi-postal stamps with designs featuring the three kings and a star of Bethlehem, an angel and child, the Southern Cross and a child, and a mother and child.

The US Postal Service regularly issues both a religious-themed and a secular-themed stamp each year.

Economics of Christmas

Christmas is typically the largest annual economic stimulus for many nations. Sales increase dramatically in almost all retail areas and shops introduce new products as people purchase gifts, decorations, and supplies. In the U.S., the "Christmas shopping season" generally begins on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, though many American stores begin selling Christmas items as early as October.^[53] In Canada, merchants begin advertising campaigns just before Halloween (October 31), and step up their marketing following Remembrance Day on November 11.

In most areas, Christmas Day is the least active day of the year for business and commerce; almost all retail, commercial and institutional businesses are closed, and almost all industries cease activity (more than any other day of the year). In England and Wales, the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 prevents all large shops from trading on Christmas Day. Scotland is currently planning similar legislation. Film studios release many high-budget movies in the holiday season, including Christmas films, fantasy movies or high-tone dramas with high production values.

An economists analysis calculates that Christmas is a deadweight loss under orthodox microeconomic theory, due to the surge in gift-giving. This loss is calculated as the difference between what the gift giver spent on the item and what the gift receiver would have paid for the item. It is estimated that in 2001 Christmas resulted in a $4 billion deadweight loss in the U.S. alone.^[54]^[55] Because of complicating factors, this analysis is sometimes used to discuss possible flaws in current microeconomic theory. Other deadweight losses include the effects of Christmas on the environment and the fact that material gifts are often perceived as white elephants, imposing cost for upkeep and storage and contributing to clutter.^[56]

Green Computing? Cikal bakal Green Computing dimulai pada tahun 1992. Saat itu US Environmental Protection Agency merelease program Energy Star, yaitu program promosi dan penghargaan bagi penerap efisiensi energi pada teknologi monitor, pengontrol iklim, dan teknologi lain. Istilah Green Computing muncul dengan booming-nya Energy Star ini, khususnya merujuk ke bagaimana kita bisa efisien dalam konsumsi energi pada penggunaan produk computing. Landasan pergerakannya adalah kebutuhan akan economic viability (keberlangsungan hidup), social responsibility (tanggung jawab sosial) dan environmental impact (pengaruh lingkungan). Para peneliti mengurai definisi Green Computing dengan sudut pandang yang sedikit berbeda. Kita bisa lihat dari beberapa di bawah:

Ternyata Green Computing tidak hanya membahas tentang energy consumption, tapi juga bagaimana kita bisa menggunakan komputer plus berbagai tool dan konten dengan lebih efisien dan jelas manfaatnya.

Yang menarik bahwa laporan Gartner tentang 10 teknologi strategis tahun 2008 (10 most strategic technologies for 2008), menempatkan isu teknologi Green Computing di nomor urut pertama. Tentu kalau kita mau analisa lebih dalam, dari 10 teknologi tersebut, SOA dan Web 2.0 tetap mendominasi, meskipun terpecah di aspek misalnya Business Process Modeling, Metadata Management, Virtualization 2.0, Mashup & Composite Apps, Web Platform & WOA dan Social Software. Mungkin sedikit saya rangkumkan tentang laporan Gartner Group ini sebagai berikut:

Berikut adalah beberapa tips Green Computing dari aspek technical sampai strategis:

1. Green Computing on PC

Laptop hanya memerlukan 10% energi yang digunakan Desktop. Flat screen hanya menggunakan 30% energi yang digunakan oleh Monitor CRT
Coba upgrade RAM, sebelum memutuskan ganti komputer. Komputer lambat bisa karena kotornya registry atau ada background services yang berjalan padahal sebenarnya tidak kita perlukan. Cek dan matikan services yang sedang berjalan padahal tidak perlu itu. Misalnya untuk Windows jalankan Start > Run > type “msconfig”
Menggunakan PC dan printer dengan merk dan jenis sama memudahkan kanibalisme dan proses recycle
Matikan komputer ketika tidak digunakan (malam hari). Mematikan komputer akan mengurangi umur komputer adalah mitos yang salah

Here is a sordid collection of places you can visit around the world with a variety of price ranges. These joints will surely take your travel stories and adventures to new levels.

United States

Beckham Creek Cave Haven

Located in the Ozarks (Arkansas), you can spend the night in this is natural living cave. (I saw other cave accommodations in my search for the bizarre and exciting, but this one seems to be the real deal as opposed to being blasted out).

The pictures look spectacular, and you are surely staying in the lap of luxury here. Or at least the lap of a big dark hole.

Dog Bark Park Inn

I’m not sure what else there is to see in Cottonwood Idaho, but this place surely is tops on the list. The owners (dog lovers – can you tell?) built the world’s largest beagle to be the bed & breakfast joint for you to write home about. It’s a friendly looking dog and all, but I can’t help but be reminded of the Trojan Horse. At the very least, it brings new meaning to “sleeping in the dog house”.

Jules’ Undersea Lodge

Located in the scuba diving Mecca of Key Largo, Florida, this hotel caters to a niche market: scuba divers. Exclusively.

You have to scuba dive to the front door of this hotel, 21feet under the sea. It is the original undersea lodge, as others have cropped up here and there since this innovative place was built. Built - or sunk, depending on how you look at it.

They offer underwater wedding packages, and “limited room service” (duh – they have to scuba dive it in!). But the real hook for me: “unlimited diving”; I should hope so!

Ice Hotel

Just in case anybody living in warmer climes was wondering, Canadians don’t live in igloos! But here at the Ice Hotel in Quebec, Canada, they do. It is absolutely amazing what you can do with walls and furniture when you aren’t relegated to boring materials like drywall and plaster. The construction of the Ice Hotel changes each year, and is truly art. Everything – absolutely everything – is made of ice.

They say it’s surprisingly warm inside, but I can’t help but think that sleeping on a giant block of ice isn’t exactly toasty. It’s only open from January through March (when it starts to melt), so space fills up quickly.

Average cost: $300-475, but you can find promotions for as little as $150

Japan

Asakusa Capsule Hotel

We all know the Japanese are years ahead of North America in terms of wackiness, and they’re a little short on space too. Couple these two facts, and you have the Asakusa Capsule Hotel.

It looks more like a submarine than anything else; absolutely miniscule capsules stacked on top of one another for rooms. They cater to budget travelers (you aren’t exactly paying for a lot of space), and on the site they say “single travelers welcome”. That’s good, because I don’t think you could fit a party of two in there, no matter how well they know each other.

Rooms come complimentary with a panic button. Ahh – home sweet home.

Average cost: $30

Sweden

Utter Inn

In English, this means Otter Inn, which is an apt description for this floating underwater hotel in Stockholm, Sweden. Show up, and they’ll paddle you 1km out to the middle of a lake where a small out-house looking contraption floats on the water. Then they drop you off and you’re left to enjoy your own private island. Your living space isn’t limited to the outhouse and surrounding deck however – the bedroom is actually below, 10 feet under the water.

They too have “limited room service” – go figure. But at least you get to sleep in your own little aquarium; except this time you’re in the aquarium and the fish are on the outside. Gives you a whole new level of respect for your goldfish.

Average Cost: $250-350

Amsterdam

Harbour Crane

Located in Harlingen, Amsterdam, this is just what it sounds: an operational harbour crane. It is located right on the quay, and inside is a luxury room for two. Its height varies with the sea levels, but can range from 17-49 metres high. And why on earth would you like to sleep in a crane? Well, the view is surprisingly spectacular. But the real reason: you get to jump in the cockpit and play with the fully operational crane! This is truly a toy for boys.

The same company also offers a converted lifeboat and lighthouse as alternate accommodations. They are generally booked up to five months in advance, so if flirting with the construction industry and playing with big toys is up your alley, book early.

France

Hotel Everland

Like so many weird and wacky hotels, the Hotel Everland is installation art at its best. It is actually a mobile hotel, but don’t get any pictures of trailer parks in your mind here: it uses its mobility to set up in some of the most amazing places. Currently it is in Paris, France, and you have to see the site to believe where it actually sits and what your view looks like.

Check in and check out times are pretty stringent though (no sleeping in and lounging about in your jammies for the morning) – it is actually a museum by day.

Average Cost: unknown, but I suspect if you have to ask you may be barking up the wrong tree

Austria

Das Park Hotel

Here’s another one for the budget-minded: you get to sleep in a giant concrete sewage pipe. Yup, you read it right. Initially I wondered why anybody would sleep in such an atrocity, and after researching the piece I still feel that way. The only saving grace I could see is its location: on the Danube, near Linz.

The sewage pipe-rooms are located on a campground, and the facilities are basic at best. Washrooms are a short walk away.

What I can’t get over is, if you want to stay on a campground, why not just bring a tent?!

Average Cost: (this is the clincher for a budget traveler and possibly makes the whole idea okay): Pay as you wish system

New Zealand

The Hobbit Motel, Woodlyn Park

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, you may be rushing to Otorohanga, New Zealand to stay here. The world’s first (first? There are more?) Hobbit Motel is located in Woodlyn Park, and is an exact replica of the hobbit homes you saw in the movies. The inside is considerably more contemporary (which actually detracts from the idea in of staying in hobbit accommodations in my mind), but at least it’s comfortable and you don’t have to crouch everywhere you go.

At Woodlyn Park, you can also stay in a plane, a ship, or a train if hobbits aren’t your thing.

Average Cost: $135

Panama

Canopy Tower Ecolodge and Observatory

This spectacular hotel is in Panama City, Panama and if you are a nature and bird-watching enthusiast this should send you into fits of ecstasy. Your accommodations take the form of an old radar tower and afford 360 degree views high over top of the rainforest. Your room is made up of a 30ft high dome, with an upper level bedroom full of windows, and a lower level living space perfect for observing birds high in the forest canopy.

They do warn you to bring earplugs if you don’t wish the birds to be your alarm clock at first light.

Average Cost: $105-220

Koobface: attacking Facebook, MySpace, and now Bebo..

Koobface? The name given to a computer worm that uses Facebook's messaging system to infect PCs in an attempt to gather sensitive information such as credit card numbers.

Koobface propagates by sending notes to Facebook friends of someone whose PC has been infected. The messages, with subject headers like, "You look just awesome in this new movie," direct recipients to a Web site where they are asked to download what it claims is an update of Adobe Systems Inc's Flash player.

If they download the software, users end up with an infected computer, which then takes users to contaminated sites when they try to use search engines from Google, Yahoo, MSN and Live.com, according McAfee.

The Koobface virus also attacks users of the MySpace social networking site. Variants of the worm include Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.a. and Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.b.

Facebook Hit With 'Koobface' Virus

Facebook's 120 million users are being targeted by a virus dubbed "Koobface" that uses the social network's messaging system to infect PCs, then tries to gather sensitive information such as credit card numbers.

It is the latest attack by hackers increasingly looking to prey on users of social networking sites.

"A few other viruses have tried to use Facebook in similar ways to propagate themselves," Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said in an e-mail. He said a "very small percentage of users" had been affected by these viruses.

"It is on the rise, relative to other threats like e-mails," said Craig Schmugar, a researcher with McAfee Inc.

Koobface spreads by sending notes to friends of someone whose PC has been infected. The messages, with subject headers like, "You look just awesome in this new movie," direct recipients to a website where they are asked to download what it claims is an update of Adobe Systems Inc's Flash player.

McAfee warned in a blog entry on Wednesday that its researchers had discovered that Koobface was making the rounds on Facebook.

Facebook requires senders of messages within the network to be members and hides user data from people who do not have accounts, said Chris Boyd, a researcher with FaceTime Security Labs. Because of that, users tend to be far less suspicious of messages they receive in the network.

"People tend to let their guard down. They think you've got to log in with an account, so there is no way that worms and other viruses could infect them," Boyd said.

Social network MySpace, owned by News Corp, was hit by a version of Koobface in August and used security technology to eradicate it, according to a company spokeswoman. The virus has not cropped up since then, she said.

Privately held Facebook has told members to delete contaminated e-mails and has posted directions at www.facebook.com/security on how to clean infected computers.

Richard Larmer, chief executive of RLM Public Relations in New York, said he threw out his PC after it became infected by Koobface, which downloaded malicious software onto his PC. It was really bad. It destroyed my computer," he said.

McAfee has not yet identified the perpetrators behind Koobface, who are improving the malicious software behind the virus in a bid to outsmart security at Facebook and MySpace.

"The people behind it are updating it, refining it, adding new functionalities," said McAfee's Schmugar.

When the worm executes, it copies itself as the following file:
c:\windows\mstre6.exe

It also creates the following file which serves as an infection marker:
c:\windows\tmark2.dat

It then creates the following registry entry so that it runs every time Windows starts:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\"systray" = "c:\windows\mstre6.exe"

The worm deletes the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\Explorer\Navigating

When executed for the first time on a given machine it will display the following message box in order to distract user's attention from its real purpose:
Window title: Error
Window body: Error installing Codec. Please contact support.

Then it searches for cookies related to social networking sites. If none are found, the worm deletes itself.

If the worm finds the appropriate security cookie, it modifies the settings so that links to malicious sites will be added to the user's profile to trick visitors into following. These links will point to a copy of the worm disguised as a video codec.

Recommendations

Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

Use a firewall to block all incoming connections from the Internet to services that should not be publicly available. By default, you should deny all incoming connections and only allow services you explicitly want to offer to the outside world.
Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers. This helps to prevent or limit damage when a computer is compromised.
Ensure that programs and users of the computer use the lowest level of privileges necessary to complete a task. When prompted for a root or UAC password, ensure that the program asking for administration-level access is a legitimate application.
Disable AutoPlay to prevent the automatic launching of executable files on network and removable drives, and disconnect the drives when not required. If write access is not required, enable read-only mode if the option is available.
Turn off file sharing if not needed. If file sharing is required, use ACLs and password protection to limit access. Disable anonymous access to shared folders. Grant access only to user accounts with strong passwords to folders that must be shared.
Turn off and remove unnecessary services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, threats have less avenues of attack.
If a threat exploits one or more network services, disable, or block access to, those services until a patch is applied.
Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services.
Configure your email server to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used to spread threats, such as .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif and .scr files.
Isolate compromised computers quickly to prevent threats from spreading further. Perform a forensic analysis and restore the computers using trusted media.
Train employees not to open attachments unless they are expecting them. Also, do not execute software that is downloaded from the Internet unless it has been scanned for viruses. Simply visiting a compromised Web site can cause infection if certain browser vulnerabilities are not patched.
If Bluetooth is not required for mobile devices, it should be turned off. If you require its use, ensure that the device's visibility is set to "Hidden" so that it cannot be scanned by other Bluetooth devices. If device pairing must be used, ensure that all devices are set to "Unauthorized", requiring authorization for each connection request. Do not accept applications that are unsigned or sent from unknown sources.

1. Artemisia, Wormwood

Artemisias, or wormwoods, are rugged perennial herbs with varied leaf forms that are usually selected for their silvery foliage color. The flowers are insignificant yellowish daisies. Some types are woodier or shrubbier than others. Size ranges from four inches to over four feet.

How to grow: Artemisias tolerate drought, heat, and cold but not wet feet in winter. They grow in any decent garden soil with good drainage. Plants perform best in full sun and become somewhat leggy in partial shade.

Propagation: By division in early spring, also from seed.

Uses: Low-growing types of artemisia can be used at the front of borders and in rock gardens. Tall types are good toward the back in flower borders and can be massed by themselves.

Related species: Artemisia absinthium is the common herbal (but somewhat toxic) wormwood, called absinthe. A. ludoviciana is known as southernwood and white sage -- Silver King -- is a popular cultivar. A. frigida forms low mats and can be pruned to shape.

Spearmint is a perennial herb and a refreshing member of the mint family. Often used in chewing gum, breath mints, and toothpaste, spearmint also makes a useful culinary herb.

Description of licorice plant: Licorice plant is a mound-forming or trailing shrub, which, when grown as an annual, bears stems that reach about 20 inches long. They are covered with furry, silver, heart-shaped leaves, also available with cream or yellow coloration. If allowed to flower late in the growing season, it produces cream-colored flower heads.

How to grow licorice plant: Grow in well-drained soil of moderate fertility or ordinary peat-based potting mix in full sun to light shade.

Propagating licorice plant: Root cuttings of firm shoots in summer to winter indoors and then replant in spring.

Uses for licorice plant: Blend a single, silver-leaved plant in a pot with cool blue and purple or warm red and pink flowers. Try the golden-leaved form with warm orange and red flowers. You also can plant masses of either color in annual beds for the contrasting foliage and season-long color.

Licorice plant related varieties: 'Limelight' has yellow-green leaves and grows best in light shade. 'Variegatum' has cream-variegated silver leaves.

5. Dill

Dill is a beautiful annual, which is edible as well as ornamental. The foliage, flowers, and dill seeds have a marvelous flavor while the upright plants, feathery foliage, and yellow flowers look great in flower borders or mixed gardens.

Description of dill: Dill has hollow, ridged, upright stems that reach to about 2 feet high and are topped with airy, umbrella-shaped clusters of tiny yellow flowers.

How to grow dill: Plant seeds in full sun and well-drained, average to fertile soil, thinning seedlings to 8 to 12 inches apart. Dill grows quickly from a ferny sprout to a tall flowering specimen. Once it sets seed, the plant quickly deteriorates, a good reason for replanting every couple weeks through the early half of the growing season.

Propagating dill: Plant dill seeds directly in the garden from late spring through the middle of summer. Self-sown seeds may emerge from around old plants if the soil is not disturbed.

Uses for dill: Dill makes a wonderful upright accent plant in large container gardens or mixed flower beds. Or use it for color and flavor in a decorative vegetable and herb garden.

Dill related varieties: 'Bouquet' is a compact dwarf, less likely to tip over in the wind. Compact 'Fernleaf,' an award winner, is slower to flower and set seed and therefore provides a longer harvest of the aromatic leaves.

The editor indents, completes, and highlights your Ruby code syntactically as well as semantically. It parses your code live as you type, so it can match words and brackets, mark errors and occurrences, and display new quick fixes (improved in 6.1) and RDoc.

In 6.1 you can now maintain hints and errors in the task list. With a few keystrokes you insert commonly used code snippets from live templates. Refactoring and support for Test::Unit, Auto Test, and RSpec are well integrated.

The C and C++ editor is well integrated with the multi-session GNU gdb debugger. You can set line and function breakpoints and view them in the Breakpoints window. In the mid-1800s, the story of a man-eating tree captured widespread attention. In a report he wrote for the South Australian Register, Carl Liche, a German explorer, claimed that while exploring Madagascar, he'd witnessed a woman climb the trunk of a large plant and drink its nectar. When the plant sensed her presence, it captured her with its tentacles and pulled her into its body.

One hundred years later, a 1950s science writer debunked the legend, asserting that not only was there no such tree, but that no one by name of Carl Liche had ever explored Madagascar.

While a tentacle-wielding, man-consuming tree may not exist, a scaled-down version of such a plant does. The man-eating tree of Madagascar may have been an exaggeration of the pitcher plants that grow in Madagascar, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and other hot and humid, low-lying areas. The largest of the pitcher plants is known as Nepenthes, and this plant does capture small vermin and lizards in its pitchers (or flowers).

The pitcher plant creates a substance within its leaves that coats the inside of its pitcher-shaped flowers. This substance mixes with water that the plant draws up through its roots. Insects and, on occasion, small animals are attracted to the scented water. When they come to drink, they fall into the pitcher, are unable to escape, and the plant draws nutrients from the captured prey.

While you certainly won't fall prey to the pitchers of the Nepenthes -- they're entirely too small to hold a human -- you could easily fall prey to the sickness some plants induce. In fact, the following five could actually kill you.

Poisonous Plant Number 5: The Castor Bean

The castor bean plant, or Ricinus communis, is widely cultivated for its castor oil and is also used as an ornamental plant. Neither of these uses would clue you into the fact that this plant has deadly contents: ricin.

Castor oil is a mild-tasting vegetable oil that is used in many food additives, flavorings and in candy production. It's also available to the consumer as a laxative and to induce labor (though no scientific evidence shows it's successful in inducing labor). Castor oil comes from the plant's seeds, which are 40 to 60 percent oil.

The castor bean plant probably originated in Africa, but is now found throughout the world. This large, shrubby plant is popularly used in gardens because of its hardy nature. It grows well in barren areas and doesn't require special care. It's fast-growing and can reach 36 feet (11 meters) in a season. The flowers of the plant are yellowish green, and the centers of the flowers are red. The leaves are large with toothed edges.

Ricin is present in low levels throughout the plant, but it is largely concentrated in the seed coating. Seed poisonings are rare and usually involve children and pets, but they can be deadly. As few as three seeds, which are green with brown markings, could kill a child who swallows them.

Symptoms of castor bean poisoning include nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, internal bleeding, and kidney and circulation failure. Many people suffer from an allergic reaction to the dust from the seeds and may experience coughing, muscle aches and difficulty breathing. Exposure to the dust is most common in areas where the beans are processed for commercial use. In ancient times, the castor bean was used in ointments, and allegedly, Cleopatra applied the oil to the whites of her eyes to brighten them.

All-natural Murder
Well-known Bulgarian writer Georgi Markov defected from Bulgaria in 1969, when Bulgaria was still a Communist state. Once he settled in England, he took a job as a journalist and broadcaster for BBC World Service and Radio Free Europe. Bulgarian government officials were not pleased when Markov developed a broadcast titled "In Absentia -- Reports" about life in Communist Bulgaria. So they made arrangements to silence him for good.

As Markov stood at the bus stop one day, he felt a sharp jab in the back of his leg. When he turned, a man apologized for poking him with his umbrella. Three days later, Markov was dead. During an autopsy, physicians removed a metal pellet the size of a pin head from Markov's calf. The pellet was hollow in the center and contained traces of ricin [source: Center for Disease Control].

Poisonous Plant Number 4: Deadly Nightshade

The name says it all. Deadly nightshade, or Atropa belladonna, contains poisonous atropine and scopolamine in its stems, leaves, berries and roots.

Deadly nightshade is a perennial plant that grows between 2 and 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) tall. You'll recognize it by its dull, dark green leaves and bell-shaped purple, scented flowers, which bloom from mid-summer through early fall. Deadly nightshade berries are green when they form and turn to a shiny black as they ripen. They're sweet and juicy, which makes them tempting to children. The plant requires rich, moist soil to thrive, and it grows wild in some areas of the world, but in the U.S. is limited to cultivation. Not all animals are affected by deadly nightshade. While it's deadly to humans and some animals, horses, rabbits and sheep can eat the leaves without harm, and birds feed on the berries.

The poisons contained in deadly nightshade affect the nervous system. Taken in sufficient doses, the deadly poison paralyzes nerve endings in the involuntary muscles of the body, such as the blood vessels, heart and gastrointestinal muscles. Symptoms of deadly nightshade poisoning include dilated pupils, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, headaches, confusion and convulsions. As few as two ingested berries can kill a child, and 10 to 20 berries would kill an adult. Even handling the plant can cause irritation.

Legend has it that women in Italy put deadly nightshade juice in their eyes to brighten them [source: Georgetown Pharmacology]. In fact, one of the common names for deadly nightshade is belladonna, which is Italian for "beautiful lady." Today, doctors rarely perform any type of eye surgery without using atropine, one of the poisons in deadly nightshade, to dilate the patient's pupils.

If you think the only way to find a poisonous plant is to visit the jungles of South America or the tropical zones of Africa, you're mistaken. You'll find plants that could make you seriously ill or even kill you at your local garden center. Plants with innocent-sounding names, like cardinal flower and angel's trumpet, could send you to the hospital. Ingesting cardinal's flower's leaves or blooms can cause extreme gastrointestinal distress, and the angel's trumpet's leaves and blooms can cause terrifying hallucinations.

Poisonous Plant Number 3: Rosary Pea

The rosary pea, or Abrus precatorius, has very pretty seeds. Two-thirds of the seed is red, and the top third is black. These decorative seeds are often used to make jewelry, and that jewelry is imported to other countries. In fact, these seeds are especially popular for rosary prayer beads.

But rosary pea seeds contain the poison abrin. The seeds are only dangerous when the coating is broken -- swallowed whole, the rosary pea doesn't present any danger. But if the seed is scratched or damaged, it's deadly. The rosary pea poses greater danger to the jewelry maker than to the wearer. There are many reported cases of death when jewelry makers prick a finger while handling the rosary pea.

Rosary pea plant is an aggressive grower and can take over an area if not kept in check. One rosary pea vine can grow and climb over 20 feet (6 meters) in a single season. The plant, which is native to Indonesia, has spread across the world, in tropic and sub-tropic climates. It's even located in several states in the United States, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Hawaii. The plant has long leaves with off-shooting leaflets and red flowers.

Abrin, the poison found in the rosary pea seed, is more deadly than ricin. Less than 3 micrograms of abrin in the body is enough to kill, which is less than the amount of poison in one pea. In the human body, abrin bonds to cell membranes and prevents protein synthesis, one of the most important duties of the cell. Symptoms of rosary pea inhalation poisoning are: difficult breathing, fever, nausea and fluid in the lungs. If ingested -- and the seed coating is broken -- rosary pea seeds cause severe nausea and vomiting, which eventually leads to dehydration, and ends with the kidneys, liver and spleen shutting down. Death usually follows within three to four days.

Using Deadly Plants as Medicine
It seems counterintuitive to put deadly plants to work at saving lives. But some of the most deadly plants are used in the medical arena. Jimsonweed, for example, has been used by hired assassins to kill people and by doctors to treat epilepsy. Other contenders?

Castor bean plant is used in Paclitaxel, a chemotherapy drug, in Sandimmune, a drug for immune suppression, and in Xenaderm, a topical treatment for skin ulcers.
Scopolamine, one of the poisons found in deadly nightshade, was combined with morphine as early as 1902 and used to induce "twilight sleep" during childbirth.
Quinine, the long-standing treatment for malaria and internal parasites, is derived from the bark of the cinchona tree. It's deadly if consumed in large amounts.

Poisonous Plant Number 2: Water Hemlock

The water hemlock, or cicuta maculata, is a very attractive wildflower with an upright growth pattern, purple-striped leaves and small white blooms. But the water hemlock's white roots are sometimes mistaken for a parsnip plant -- a potentially fatal error. The poison contained in the water hemlock, cicutoxin, is present in the entire plant, but is most concentrated in the roots. Anyone who confuses the plant with parsnips and decides to take a bite faces a violent death.

The water hemlock, which is native to North America, is considered by many to be the most deadly plant on the continent. The wildflower, which grows to 6 feet (1.8 meters), thrives along stream banks, in marshy areas, and in low-lying, damp meadows.

For those unlucky enough to taste the water hemlock, the onset of illness is rapid. The cicutoxin contained in the plant causes violent and painful convulsions, nausea, vomiting, cramps and muscle tremors. Those who survive the poisoning experience long-term health conditions, such as amnesia. No amount of water hemlock root is considered safe to ingest.

Plants that Attack
It seems impossible that a plant, rooted to one spot, could attack. But several species of stinging trees, indigenous to rainforest areas of Australia and Indonesia, certainly make victims feel that they've been assaulted. These plants, which range from overgrown shrubs to full-sized trees, have glass-like hairs covering their leaves and fruits.

When a person brushes up against the plant, those hairs become dislodged and imbedded in the person's skin. The hair, once under your skin, releases a neurotoxin that causes pain. Neurotoxins are poisons that work specifically on the nerve cells in the body. The pain gradually subsides but can reoccur intermittently for several months. There's one confirmed death due to stinging tree, and other anecdotes of victims, particularly World War II soldiers, shooting themselves to escape the pain.

Poisonous Plant Number 1: Oleander

The oleander, or Nerium oleander, is considered by many to be the most poisonous plant in the world. All parts of the beautiful oleander contain poison -- several types of poison. Two of the most potent are oleandrin and neriine, known for their powerful effect on the heart. An oleander's poison is so strong, in fact, that it can poison a person who simply eats the honey made by bees that have digested oleander nectar.

The oleander is an attractive plant, and despite its deadly reputation is often planted for decorative purposes. Although native to the Far East and the Mediterranean areas, oleander has been introduced in the United States, where it grows easily. It's tolerant of poor quality soil and dry weather. The plant grows as a dense shrub, and is typically 6 to 18 feet (1.8 to 5.4 meters) tall at maturity. It has thick, dark green leaves, and the flowers, which grow in clusters, can be yellow, red, pink or white.

Even in barren areas, the oleander produces lovely flowers and fragrance. Animals instinctively avoid the plant, and it grows rapidly, so it's often used for highway barriers and other areas that require screening from noise and pollution. Its rapid growth also makes it a popular choice around new construction zones, as it prevents erosion.

Unlike some toxic plants, the oleander is poisonous to most animals as well as humans. A single ingested oleander leaf can kill a child. Ingestion of oleander results in diarrhea, vomiting, intense stomach pain, drowsiness, dizziness, an irregular heartbeat, and often, death. If the victim survives the initial 24 hours after ingestion, his or her odds of surviving increase dramatically. For successful treatment, the patient is induced to vomit, his or her stomach may be pumped, or he or she may be fed activated charcoal to absorb as much of the poison as possible.
